World leaders discuss abuse of women in Shafter
Experts on abuse against women and world leaders from the Commission on Women’s Concerns converge in Shafter for a two year survey. The Executive Chair Winnie Bartel invites the task force to experience Small Town America and continue studying abuse and injustices. The gathering runs May 10 to May 15 with diverse faith voices and prayers in English and Bulgarian, aiming to address domestic violence and social problems through faith-based outreach.

Young Pageant Promotes Winners Amid Event Haste
Veronica Perez was selected as First Runner-Up while the judges announced the title. The event included a sash presentation and a big hug for the winner. A raffle and aid drawings awarded a color TV, VCR, microwave oven, and CD player. Public drew near the post event dance with additional photos on page 7.

Berry brothers lead Shafter golf trio to league crown
Scott and Andrew Berry, both varsity golfers for Shafter High, carried the team to third in league as coach Belton Banks noted. Andrew won the league title at 77 from blue tees while Scott, a senior, won it last year with 74. Andrew aims for college golf and possibly pro status, plans to study after high school, and competes in RC car racing in Wasco. The brothers, 16 and 17, live in Wasco with mother Linda. Matt Fagin also contributed significantly this season.
