Partnerships with EDD Pro teus Curtis Resources Mental Health Kern High School District and Kern Regional Transit provide no cost training and work experience for the working poor with programs in auto mechanics welding and nursing assistant plus Micro Word Excel and WordPerfect 8.0 certificates.

The Potter Valley style Potato-Cotton Festival in Shafter marks its 50th year with a Kick Off Dinner and Street Dance Friday at 6 p.m. on James and Central, featuring Tony Martinez and My Country Band. Dinner and dance total 7.50 for adults and 4 for children, with no alcohol. Saturday offers a Country Style Breakfast at Richland Intermediate, followed by a 10 a.m. parade led by Junior Miss Valerie Payne and local merchant and vendor activities on Central Avenue Stage One showcases.
