Local Spuds Are Moving This Week In Shafter

Local spud season starts with at least three sheds operating and 28 cars on the move by Wednesday night. Five cars loaded Monday at the J. H. Maurer shed, Lach enmaier shed opened Tuesday, Emanuel Mettlelr shed Wednesday, with about 50 cars shipped including some non local stock. Early outlook remains favorable with expected price rise and all holdovers likely to be cleared by month end.

Funeral rites held for Edwin M. Burner in Bakersfield

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Bakersfield for Edwin M. Burner 81 former Shafter resident who died Sunday in a Bakersfield hospital He was prominent in the Shafter district having owned property near the Shafter oil field for years Before retiring in 1934 he drove the Field-Wasco stage line for 20 years Surviving him are his daughter Mrs T S Rowe of Bakersfield and three grandchildren Mrs Wendell R Hoar of Tracy and Mrs L M

McGrane Heads Shafter Business Men's Association

Dr L H McGrane was elected president of the Shafter Business Men's Association for the coming year at the Friday luncheon at Neuman cafe. Earnest Penaro became secretary, succeeding A R Duehren. The group discussed scouting activity, repairs to the old firehouse building for city offices, and a Santa Fe Valley bus schedule set to start within 60 days barring legal delays.

Boy 17 Given Chance For Life After Suicide Attempt

Herbert Sallee, 17, of a transient family living at Myrick's Corners, attempted suicide Sunday night by a .22 rifle. He was treated at Kern General hospital where an emergency operation was performed. initial critical condition improved by Wednesday, giving doctors some hope for recovery.

Escape Injury As Car Plunges Into Canal

R. J. Bennett of Fellows his wife and three children escaped uninjured when a Shafter highway bridge railing broke and the car toppled into the canal. Police believe a sharp curve and speed caused the crash before the driver could slow. The heavy car lay on its side in water but the occupants escaped through a back door. The wreckage was moved to a Shafter garage for inspection.

Shafter Observes Air Mail Anniversary With Nationwide Ties

Shafter joins the nation for National Air Mail Week May 15 to 21 centering May 19 events. A special cachet will launch letters from the airport as Frank Don Carlos pilots a flight to Bakersfield to connect with national lines. Shafter Boy Scout Troop Wins All Camping Merits

All three patrols of Shafter Boy Scout troop earned the maximum camping proficiency merits at the Beale Park camporee in Bakersfield. Fifteen awards are displayed at Richland School. The boys left Shafter Saturday noon, stayed until Sunday, and managed camps, meals, and conduct independently under strong leadership. The Bakersfield showing qualifies them for regional contests in Santa Paula May 21–22 or the Visalia camporee in September.

Kern county potato growers meet today in Richland auditorium to discuss and ballot a referendum on a tentative Federal Marketing Agreement for Irish potatoes. Getty Well Moves to New Location on Shatter Field

The Ramsay B-1 drilling rig will relocate to a new site at Shatter Field. A second well is planned to be spudded around the first of the month.

Superior May Bring In Wagner No 3 Well This Week

Rumors circulate that Superior may bring in its Wagner No 3 well in the Shafter oil field late this week or early next. Drilling reportedly around 11 000 feet, Vedder formation in the field lies between 11 200 and 11 500 feet, suggesting an imminent completion. The well sits north and west of the Getty Ramsey B-1 well in section 35 28 29.

Shafter Council Shelves Proposals Pending Revenue Study

The council tabled offers on garbage collection while awaiting revenue projections. Bids came from H. C. Froese J. Paul and Roy Paslay. They also studied license fees for laundry and dry cleaners serving outside the city and planned cross city comparisons. An emergency amendment to ordinance six would require city jail inmates to work on public projects and could trigger misdemeanor charges otherwise. John C. Board to Name Successor Supt After Spindt Resigns

Applications for the job had been received and the board planned to name a successor. Spindt announced his resignation April 27 after 16 years as superintendent. He joined the faculty in 1917 after graduating from the University of California and became principal in 1922.
