Also listings for Campers First Grade program, domestic violence services in Wasco, high school reunion plans, weekly soup dinner, and May 14 Minter Field pancake breakfast volunteers.
Richland School District and Shafter Schools Project push a summer reading initiative to prevent summer learning loss. The program, ending May 15, targets 3,000 students with two books each, backed by 2,500+ books and over $1,200 in funds. Local support is essential to provide at home reading options.
Three Shafter High School drama students wrote and directed their own one act plays performed May 6 at the Fred L Starrh Performing Arts Center. Advisor Carla Stanley praised student effort, noting the project teaches teamwork responsibility and a comprehensive theatre skill set.
About 200 Shafter High School students take Advanced Placement exams across English Statistics Biology and Government. Ed Watts says nearly 150 come from low income families and test fees are lowered for them. He notes AP credits can count for college credit and some students may graduate high school in three years.
