City of Shafter offers a Summer Reading Camp for students entering first grade in Fall 2011. Registration by May 19 required. Camp features computer reading games and skilled teachers to boost early literacy. Contact city hall or local elementary schools for details.
Shafter celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a weekend of events led by a grand parade along Central Avenue. Thousands watched floats bands and dancers pass by while families enjoyed rides booths and entertainment at Manne Park. Community leaders praised the festival as a unifying tradition reflecting local culture.
Alumni and supporters gathered on Saturday April 30 to celebrate 100 years of Maple School. Ben Warkentin 87 recalled the school’s charm and history, while Principal Shayleen Hart praised its bright future. More than 150 attendees enjoyed steak dinner, with graduates from Colorado and Illinois reconnecting with the Mustangs.
The Depot Museum features a new display titled Trains Through Shafter. The exhibit contrasts toy trains with realistic model trains and explains scale choices, noting HO scale at 1:87 is too large for the space.
The Masonic Lodge of Wasco held a Recognition of Education on April 28 to honor principals superintendents and administrators from ten districts. Maple Elementary Rio Bravo Greeley Pond Lost Hills Union Semitropic Richland Buttonwillow Wasco Union and Wasco Union High School were among institutions represented.
