Sequoia Elementary kindergarten teacher Judy Reynaga West was named Kern County Teacher of the Year by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. At a May 12 reception at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, West spoke of overcoming early literacy barriers and shaping student goals. Other local nominees include Dawn Payne, Mary Smith, Darin Lundgren, Katrina Ashlock, Ashley Brown, Katie Vargas, Balbina Sanchez, with praise for all contributors to education in Shafter Wasco Buttonwillow and Lost Hills areas.
Hundreds of Kern County student leaders from Wasco Frontier Independence South Bakersfield Centennia North Bakersfield Delano Highland West Bakersfield BHS Caesar Chavez Ridgeview Golden Valley Kennedy and others gathered at Shafter High School on Friday May 13 for the Kern Association of Student Councils event. The day featured leadership activities and school spirit with workshops on community service fundraisers rallies and testing among diverse student groups.
Brookside Deli at 402 Central Ave reports a burglary attempt Saturday around 9 30 PM. Thieves cut power and forced a door but fled empty handed after triggering a battery powered alarm. DNA blood evidence collected for Kern County Crime Lab. Local residents urged to ensure home alarms function without electricity.
Planes filled the skies and runways at Minter Field as the Minter Field Air Museum hosted its annual fly-in on Saturday May 14. Thousands of spectators viewed Warbirds antiques helicopters and jets, with families enjoying aviation history and researchers from NASA praising the gathering for illustrating nearly 110 years of flight evolution.
