The American Legion Auxiliary met with Jane Hahn presiding. Edna Camp is chairing the nominating committee, Ann Raney named to the executive board, and Wilma Guenther nominated from the floor.
Rev. Erwin Kohfield pastor of Wasco’s First Baptist spoke to the Shafter Kiwanis about Communism drawing on 14 years in the Orient. He described life under Chinese Communists and warned the same could arise in the United States if the movement took hold.
A short wedding anniversary note recalls Mr. and Mrs. Har marking one year since their marriage during a trip to Santa Barbara.
In a tight race for the Shafter Public Utility District board, Adolph Kirschenmann and Al Finkbeiner won by slim margins as ballots tallied 136 votes total. They succeed outgoing members William Lachenmaier and Joe Frizzell, with Glenn Nay continuing his term. The board, three members elected biennially for four-year terms, will then swear in the new directors and designate a president.
Preliminary judging moved to May 24 for the Shafter Potato Festival Queen due to the 20 30 club Pre Harvest dance. Entrants within 5 miles of Shafter eligible. entry deadline May 15. Final on May 28 at the high school auditorium.
Opal Evans as general chairman and Robert Gates as adviser lead Shafter High School carnival on the football field from 2 to 7 pm. The event features midget racers, cartoon movies, fun house, side shows, games, refreshment booths, and a 25-cent Y M C A car raffle. Carnival proceeds fund The Laurion yearbook and senior banquet fund.
Shafter begins its 1948 potato season with two of 23 sheds operating. Robert Neuman and Sons and R A Jacobsen sheds shipped nine and ten cars respectively from near Kern County Airport and Shafter. Prices on US Number 1s range from 3.10 to 3.25 with strong demand as more sheds prepare to open through May 20.

The Junior Women's Club sets Wednesday May 12 for its officer installation at West's in Wasco with Mrs Ed Brown presiding. A rummage sale runs tomorrow and a food booth at the Potato Festival on June 12 is planned to raise funds.
Shafter Rotarians heard Kern County Supervisor Roy Wollomes discuss the Kern General Hospital controversy dating back 18 years. He said the dispute is internal, with changes underway and a goal to settle it. The meeting also covered the Shafter Potato Festival plans, parking maps, and food concessions.
The 20 30 club of Shafter sponsors a pre harvest dance on Saturday May 22 at the Shafter Woman's Club house. Dancing starts at 9 p.m. with Jerry Adams' Bakersfield orchestra. Advance ticket sales are strong and a record crowd is expected. Greg Malory Otto Handi lead ticket sales. dance chairman Harry Bluntkin. Tickets cost $1.10 with proceeds to the annual children’s Christmas party.
Shafter Wasco Irrigation District directors endorsed forming a Kern County Water Agency to speed water development in Kern County areas short of water. They will seek a Sacramento meeting with State Engineer Edward Hiett and plan to attend a Delano session May 13 to sign a contract between the Southern San Joaquin Municipal District and the Bureau of Reclamation.
Five Shafter veterans start flight courses at Wilson's Flying Academy in Bakersfield under the G I education program. Lloyd Warden Wesley Gorsching Dick Johnson Gene Guenther begin private pilot training while Wallace Loewen pursues a commercial course. The 40 hour flight program plus 54 hours of night school at Bakersfield J C covers civil air regulations radio meteorology and air service, with completion expected within a week.
At Camp Nelson last weekend Mrs. J. C. Chan deson and Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Arnold hosted events with the Shatterites group.
The 20 30 Club led by Metwin Schirmer raised 622.10 for cancer funds, surpassing the 600 target. Donors included Tom Letizia George Geisler Mary Kelly and others with cans in stores and gifts from Community Chest totaling 500. The club will assist next year with Chest collections.
Two arrests highlighted a relatively calm police week. Henry Pinard was arrested on a warrant for disturbing the peace and returned to Camarillo, an escapee from the state home. Bill Armstrong was fined $50 and received 30 days suspended for conduct.
