The board accepts with regret the resignation of Mrs Brock from the supervision of the main program for six schools. Her resignation will take effect at the close of the present school year. She came to Richfield in 1945 and has served since then with a 28 member staff.
The Shafter Recreation Commission trims pay for umpires and scorekeepers in the summer softball league while inflation looms. Dr Henry Voth runs for the local school board, joining incumbents Greene and Thomas in a three candidate race for two seats. The town also notes the absence of the Potato n Cotton festival but still plans a chamber float.
Swid district will offer about 90 small land parcels a chance to settle overdue taxes before the next deadline. The move aims to recover unpaid taxes affecting properties within the district.
Daniel Wendland received a building permit for a $20,275 three bedroom home on 454 Cross Street. E. K. Grant, building inspector, notes Dalke brothers will construct the 1800 square foot residence.
A public meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends by 11:30 a.m. Superintendent Bruce Crawford chairs a panel of teachers and administrators on child discipline and guidance. The event is at Shafter Play Center 808 Pacific Street with transportation options from Richland Primary, Room 9.
The annual St. Therese steak barbecue will be held June 21 at the county park, chairman Tony Brown said. Organizers expect about 1000 attendees and plan to use proceeds toward enlarging church quarters. The event has taken place annually since 1951 with Jim Hodges as permanent secretary treasurer.
Karen Wiens placed first in the under 14 division while Norma Nico won third in the over 14 group. Four other members received recognition in the county 4-H sponsorship event.
The California Public Utilities Commission and Sage Brothers Water Co. hold a hearing at 10 a.m. in the council chamber. William L. Sage, doing business as Sage Brothers Water Co., serves the Smiths Corner area in South Shafter Kern County. Examiner John A. Rowe Jr. will preside. parties may appear and be heard.
Jack Robbins, a Bakersfield high school senior, won the top prize of 100 dollars in the Bank of America awards contest. The event began with an elimination from Sacramento bank headquarters and involved a panel discussion on automation. Roger Tatum of Shafter High received honorable mention in the same competition.
The chamber will pay tribute to two school officials this Friday. Score Keepers at Shafter High School and Pioneer are slated for introductions to chamber members, with details for contact numbers Pioneer 6-4961 or 6-4507 for attendance or home arrangements.
During Shhaf Schools Week April 23 27 four Parents of the Day visited the campus. Crum Sabedea Jaz Sabedra Mrs Harold Olinger Mrs Ed Chilla and Mrs Victor Smith toured with faculty guides received corsages and shared lunch. They inspected high wire facilities and toured parts of the school with transportation arranged by the faculty club.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors appointed assemblyman H. W. Pat Kelly of Shafter as its legislative representative for congressional hearings on the Feather River Project. The hearings concern a bill introduced by B. F. Sisk of the 12th Fresno district.
The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District board appointed member Loren Voth to serve as a member in the Friant Water Users Association. The association includes users of water from the Friant Kern and Madera canals.
The Lion's Club discussed a May 18 bond vote by Buttonwillow Union School District to fund an auditorium gymnasium. Architects Kenney and Cullimore presented preliminary drawings while District Superintendent Al Lacky explained needs and growth. Bonds cover property use building alterations furniture and site improvements. Trustees listed D. L. Hughett Roy Balloumini A F Barulich Nelson E Lewis and W F Schroeter.
Shafter High School generals travel home to face arch rival Wasco Tigers Saturday at 2 p.m. in a South Sequoia league doubleheader with varsity and junior varsity games. Wasco seeks a seventh straight league win as Shafter aims for its second victory after a 6-5 loss to Taft followed by other uneven results.
Dr Henry W Voth of 200 hic ean seeks a seat on the local school board. He earned his medical doctorate at the University of Kansas after teaching at the University of Wichita and in elementary schools. He is married to Darlene with three sons and active in the Lions Club and local civic groups.
National Cotton Week May 14 19 will be observed quietly in Shafter to honor the industry that yields California its top agricultural income of 335000000 annually. Art Hemingson chair of the committee says merchants will feature cotton in window displays and ads. Chamber materials will be available next week and US Cotton Field Station staff will speak before service clubs during the week.
A break in at Midway Market North Shafter was reported this week by Deputy Sheriff Finlay Osborne. Burglars broke a side window reached through it and pulled tobacco wallets pencils razors and miscellaneous items from the shelf last Thursday night.
Potatoes in the Arvin Lamont and Edison Cawelo areas are due to start around May 17 with peak activity in the first week of June. Prices for US #1 washed Whites ranged from 3.75 to 3.90 this week as shipments by rail from Edison and Cawelo continued. County-wide, 669 truckloads were shipped in the period, up from 68 by April 30 and 516 in 1954. Labor shortages are expected during peak weeks.
The Kern Seed Potato Association announced its 16th annual meeting and potato field day at Cotton Experimental Field Station in Shafter. Manager T. H. Hawkins said the program starts at 9:80 a.m. with lunch at Cawelo. Growers will view tests on fertilizing and irrigation methods. About 75 to 100 growers are expected.
Hal Williams, teacher in charge, announced Blue and Gold Day will be May 12. Thirty nine Shafter High School applicants will spend one day in town businesses to gain firsthand experience of operations.
About 650 people attended the PTA barbecue and open house at Shafter High School last Thursday evening. Co chairs Wilson and Bill Irvin led the event with Herman Rains preparing the roast. Local businesses and individuals contributed, supporting the PTA scholarship fund.
Fire departments from as far north as and as far south as Los Angeles will gather at Veterans Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. for a joint meeting organized by Shafter and Bakersfield departments. Capt. Martin Patterson of the Los Angeles city fire department will discuss the mechanics of house-to-house inspection. A chicken dinner will be served.
