Famed Western movie star Johnny Mack Brown will serve as Grand Marshal of the Shafter Potato Festival on May 21 and 22. He will ride in the two hour parade, appear at the barbecue at noon, attend the RCA rodeo in the afternoon, and join the Western Dance on Saturday night.
Looking Ahead urges Shafter and Wasco Chambers to unite with the Central Valley Highway Association to press for two key projects. Build an underpass under the Santa Fe midway between Shafter and Wasco and grade and pave the remaining ten miles toward Rosedale. Joint meetings with state and county officials are urged to maximize influence and accelerate action.
The Shafter high school band will air on KERO Bakersfield Saturday evening May 21 as a prelude to the Shafter Potato Festival dance. The broadcast starts at 7 pm for a 30 minute show and the public is invited.
Shafter's hobbyists will showcase a wide range of interests at the Hobby Show on Thursday evening May 12 at the Women's Club House. Call Shafter 4914 or 671 to arrange displays. bring exhibits if calling is not possible. The event features local paintings, diverse crafts, and a Floyd Raney automatic train display.
City officials debated enforcement of the Green River Ordinance and required licenses for out-of-town peddlers in Shafter. They moved to tighten sales tax deposits, consider bonds for newcomers, and directed staff to speed up license forms while planning street projects on Central Avenue and Shafter Avenue.
The 1949 potato season starts with Robert Neuman and Sons of Shafter shipping the first four carloads last Friday. When at full capacity in about two weeks, one shed should handle 5500 to 4000 sacks daily. A new plan uses small straw pads on thin skinners to reduce bruising losses. Carloads are limited to 360 sacks.
Shafter led Kern County by surpassing its American Cancer Drive quota. Total contributions reached 847.64 dollars, 128 percent of the target, with 40 percent staying in Kern and 60 percent funding cancer research. Dr. John H. Revell lauds volunteers for low overhead and broad impact.
Services will be held this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for William Stripland Black who died Sunday at age 75. He lived in Shafter 15 years after retiring from farming in Oklahoma. Born February 27 1874 in Indiana he resided in Meyers Tract North Shafter. The Flickinger Janzen Chapel program will be led by Reverend Gordon Jans. Burial follows at Shafter Cemetery. Survived by three daughters Rosie Veach and Mattie Hall and Beulah Mullen, Bakersfield. 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
A large throng from across the state attended the tenth Kern County Homes Tour with visitors from as far as San Francisco joining about 175 people in 45 cars touring local homes in Shafter. The Jack Thompson residence showcased clever cotton fabric decor and practical, duplicable sewing ideas. The Harlan Wilson home featured remodeled cupboards, a service porch, and a brick barbecue, while the Harvey Garde house impressed with color use and a revamped dining room and basement space. The Legion Auxiliary drill team will practice tomorrow afternoon at four o'clock at Richland School. Mrs. J. L. Hill leads the session with band music provided by the school. Only two practice meets remain before the Potato Festival parade.
Tickets for the Shafter Potato Festival Rodeo go on sale at Mc Clure Drug Store Stringham's Shafter Drug Store Shafter Motel Canelo Motel. The rodeo committee headquarters are at Mc Cafferty's Cleaners on James Street with phone 9106. General admission tickets cost 1.50 dollars.
Plans are set for the R C A Cowboy Rodeo opening Saturday at 2 p m for two days of horse entertainment. Cliff McGraw of Bakersfield produces the event promoting two full days of thrill a minute excitement with world famous cowboys in hat competitions for prize money.
Roy Farrell of Richland School District Recreation outlines an Aquacade for May 21 featuring the Aquanettes from Bakersfield performing in Billy Rose style with music and comedy diving by Bill and Jack Finch. Eddy Rous, from Bakersfield Junior College, will showcase a fine exhibition as part of a full evening of events including swimming races and diving. Local high schools Shafter, Taft, Tulare, East High, and Bakersfield High are invited to enter competitive events with Fresno, Visalia, and Bakersfield junior colleges represented. Master of Ceremonies will be Bill Walker, with Montie and Louise Montana headlining trick roping and pony riding in the festival parade. Six rodeo events and a point system determine the World Champion Cowboy of the year, with a total purse of 1200 dollars plus entry fees. The two-day Shafter Potato Festival Rodeo will culminate Sunday with a horse and saddle prize drawing.
Contest for stores entries in the amateur storefront and window decorating contest was judged at 6 p m Monday by a group of out of town judges. First prize went to Johnson Neuman with 85 points, followed by Schirmer's Department Store, Sprouse Reitz Co., Central Market, and Shafter Press with 64 and 62 points respectively.
The 20th annual Father and Son Banquet for Shafter High School FFA alumni is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. There is no main speaker. alumni will give short talks summarizing the local chapter. Tickets cost $1 for father and son. Mr Glenn Nay will present awards and introduce guests. Music by Louise Jenkins and choruses by Mr Graf will accompany the meal.
George Guenther, Shafter postmaster since 1944, was elected vice president of the Kern County chapter of the National Association of Postmasters. He won the post at the Kern County Postmasters Association meeting at Cawelo on Saturday April 30 to fill the unexpired term of ill Postmaster Hamblet of Oildale. Guenther has lived in Shafter twelve years.
