The Shafter public hearing at the Veterans Hall drew about 160 attendees as Florez led discussion on a three mile dairy buffer zone for cities with 5000+ population and schools. Local officials from Shafter Wasco and Kern discussed a two mile buffer and timing before Kern Board action.
In February 2001 four Shafter men identified as Mickey Gladden, his son Brandon Gladden, Pete De Luna, and Monte Prestos faced charges after eight search warrants and four arrest warrants were executed in a two year firearms probe. Brandon Gladden, released on own recognizance by a federal court in Fresno, told the Press there was no truth in media stories, confirming disputed accounts.
The Warbirds in Action event at Shafter Winter Field on Saturday May 10 celebrates 100 years of powered flight. Ford Motor Company and Holiday Ford back the one day program featuring John Collver Eddie Andrieni and dozens of historic aircraft from WWI to modern jets. The opening ceremony at 11 am will include Bakersfield High School Jr AFROTC colors, with five hours of aerobatics and aircraft flybys. Admission is 10 for adults 5 for students under six free parking free.
