Ramon Camacho of Shafter serves as a Reserve Police Officer and Marine Reserve with A Company Bulk Fuel, 1st Platoon, stationed in Bakersfield. Deployed January 2003, he remains in Iraq. Tony Robles, 1997 Shafter High graduate, reenlisted in the Army after four years, now overseas with the Army Airborne in Italy.
Cinco de Mayo grand marshal Frances Garcia, a Shafter resident born in Mexico, leads Saturday’s festivities with a 10 am parade to Manuel Park. Garcia, who grew up in Tehachapi and Arvin, pursued education to become an administrator, becoming the first in her family to earn a degree and credential.
California Senator Florez will host a public listening session in Shafter at 6 p.m. on James Street and California Avenue to collect information for the Senate Select Committee on Air Quality in the Central Valley. The meeting focuses on dairy industry growth in Shafter Wasco and potential relocation.
Shafter residents will gather at the Shafter Downtown Plaza at noon on Thursday May 1 for the 52 Annual National Day of Prayer. A National Day of Prayer press release says millions will meet at courthouses, schools, workplaces and stadiums to pray. President Bush and governors were to sign proclamations designating the day.
The Ballet Folklorico of Shafter performs May 3 at Starr Auditorium for Cinco de Mayo. The non profit group, founded in 1996, recently hosted a Fresno dance conference with 1,000 students and includes dancers from Kern County.
Memorial services for 86 year old J Waldo Unruh of Shafter recall a life of faith and community. Born March 7 1917 in Kansas City Missouri he moved to Shafter in 1918 and helped farm. He served as Shafter High School student body president set the long jump record and later ran a service station with Don Klingenberg. A World War II Staff Sergeant and aviation mechanic he was known as a constant encourager to his savior and church community.
