A Shafter notice urges participation in Poppy Day events on May 21 and a Memorial Day service on May 26 at the Shafter Come at 10. Veterans in hospitals make the poppies and are thanked for service in all wars.
The Cinco de Mayo celebration resumes this weekend with a 10 a.m. parade down Central Avenue. The theme United We Stand honors veterans and active service members. Committee chair Deanna Root says about 35 entries and 45 booths will line the route with crafts food and fun.
Shafter City Council approved a plan to place new reflective street signs on every street, with installation possible in summer or fall. Staff previewed a large sign showing city logo, and discussions covered pole painting, startup areas, and coordinating with Public Works while maintaining budget and other directional signage plans.
Delano Drug Court held its fifth graduation as Shafter Council seeks residents to volunteer. Council updated the Emergency Operations Plan establishing an Emergency Management Organization to restore pre-emergency conditions. Training by the Red Cross runs 6 to 10 p.m. at 336 Pacific Avenue Shafter with sessions on Introduction to Disaster Services Mass Care and Shelter Operations.
Shafter honors SPC Tony Robles and SSGT Shawna Barton Tanner for their military service. Robles, a 1997 Shafter High School graduate, trained in Atlanta, served nine months in Kosovo and a year in Korea, re enlisted in January for three and a half years, and is stationed in Italy. Tanner, a 1995 Shafter High School graduate, serves in the United States Air Force and is continuing her MILITARY career on pace 2.
