Judge Reinstates Shafter Cases In Court Hearing
About 150 Shafter residents attended as Dennis Reid argued the case should not be heard in Superior Court and Elconin sought dismissal. Two witnesses testified for Spencer while Judge Noriega previously denied moving the cases to a Grand Jury, asserting the people’s right to have cases considered on their merits.

Shafter Festival Week To Feature Pageant And Parade
Shafter residents anticipate a festive lineup as the Potato and Cotton Festival runs Thursday through Sunday at G.P.O.D. park. The Junior Miss Pageant begins at 7 30 with previews by Martha Novak and the choir. Tickets cost 4 dollars reserved 3 dollars general 1 50 for children and are sold at Shafter Drug Store and Shafter High School. Saturday hosts a Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast 7 to 9 30 am Veterans Hall parade starts 10 am from Central Avenue to James Street then north to Shafter Avenue with bands floats old cars horses and more. After the parade Stringham Park hosts awards and booths while the Hospitality House opens in the Veterans Hall east wing. Deep pit barbecue tickets run 5 dollars adults 3 dollars children under ten. The American Legion dance closes Saturday night. Sunday features a Model-T Potato Race at Shafter High School stadium from 2 pm, with the 4H Jake Bergen as chair and the Model-T Club providing participants and help. Volunteers welcome and admission is free.

Solar powered plane crash at Shafter Airport experiment continues
Dr. Paul MacCready and his team, famed for the Gossamer Condor, tested a solar powered aeroplane at Shafter Airport. The craft, piloted by an unnamed rider, crashed at about 10 feet, causing heavy damage but no injuries. A replacement aircraft is expected to be built.

Richland Board Grants Superintendent Hiring Action for Junior High Counselor
The Richland School District Board of Trustees after an executive session authorized the superintendent to draft a job description and open a junior high counselor position for the 1980-81 school year, funded with district money. They accepted Opal Reynolds resignation, hired substitutes, and backed continued Title 1 and School Improvement programs for 1980-81. A public hearing on the CSEA contract produced no speakers. The board also approved life guard efforts, the 176 day instructional calendar with 179 180 staff days, and a volunteer recognition month in June.
