Bassett Named Shafter's Junior Miss for 1980
Diane Bassett was chosen at Shafter High School auditorium to lead Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival events. The pageant featured the Richland Choir under Martha Novak, Scout colors, and awards for youth fitness arts and poise. Judges included Miss Roberta Nedry and others. Curt Maynard and Danny Jenkins entertained. Monica Thompson delivered a standout solo. A $300 scholarship will be awarded to Bassett, who will compete in the California Junior Miss pageant in Santa Barbara next year.

Shafter Council OKs 3115 Payment to Chamber of Commerce

One year old killed as Shafter area faces accidents
A Shafter child, Regina Prender, age one, was killed Friday when she moved into a backing car. Three others were injured in two-car and four-car crashes in Shafter over the week, including a drunk-driving arrest and an alcohol-related crash. Several drivers, including Homer Cates, William F. McSwane, and Martin T. Johnson, faced police actions.
