Sugar Applicants Expected To Total 8000 Here
A large corps of Richland school staff and volunteers work this week to register 8000 sugar ration applicants in the district. Under Principal Errol Jones and Mrs Olson the drive uses 85 registrars and many volunteers to issue sugar books to grocers, restaurants, and other customers.

Bill Rodgers Leaves The Press For War Duty
Bill Rodgers, long time news editor of The Press, Shafter, has left his post to join military service. He completed four years with the paper, while also serving as city treasurer, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and founder of The Shafter Studio. Mrs. Rodgers remains in Shafter as Bill prepares to report for duty and wind down his city and business affairs.

Minter Band To Perform Benefit In Shafter
Minter field talent will headline a May 19 benefit in the Shafter high school gym to raise about 500 dollars for local army recreation. The Minter field military band the Negro choir the Jive Bombers and other entertainers will perform under Capt. Lee Frankovic recreation officer with tickets to go on sale next week. A three member committee will oversee the WPA recreation fund for the next year and ticket sales aim to support local recreation for soldiers and building expenses.

Weather conditions point to a strong 1942 Shafter potato harvest soon under way with more sheds opening daily. Rail shipments from the area total about 40 cars so far with 15 sent yesterday and 11 the day before. The first shipments began April 30. Growers report good yields and quality with prices holding firm at a steady level.
