Students and teachers at Shafter High set an Open House for tomorrow as National Schools Week closes. A stock show opens at 6:40 on the athletic field, classrooms open at 7:30, and an evening program in the auditorium starts at 8.
Technical Sergeant C M Gilbert received the Distinguished Flying Cross at Minter Field for extraordinary achievement during a 1941 flight from Honolulu to the Philippines. Gilbert flew as flight chief of Captain Colin Kelly’s plane in the eight bomber mission, with the War Department praising the crew’s skill and the mission’s uncharted-water undertaking. Gilbert credited Kelly as the finest man and leader he served with, noting Kelly ordered bailout as he prepared to crash, risking his life for his crew. Gilbert is a veteran with eight years in the Army.
Sugar rationing applications must be signed by families at Richland Maple and Rio Bravo schools next week. Registration runs 2 to 8 or 9 PM with only one family member appearing per household. Officials list J C Channeson Wayne Hooks and Mrs T V Little on the local board and warn penalties for falsified information.

A coroner jury ruled the death of Dye at the Shafter Farm Workers camp resulted from a heart attack suffered hours after a head blow from a car crank during a camp dispute between Dye and Perry families. Dye received first aid, then died at home. Survived by widow, eight children, and Dye’s parents.

Reports say death toll could reach up to one hundred and over five hundred injured while Presidio of San Francisco is cited as the largest U S military post within a city.
William Lachenmaier, a local businessman and farmer, was elected mayor of Shafter by a 3 to 2 vote of the five city council members. Newly sworn officers include Henry Neufeld, T Little, and City Treasurer Bill Rodgers, with outgoing Mayor Phil Channeson presiding over the oath. The council will meet May 11 to name commissioners and set regular meeting times on the second and fourth Mondays at 7:00 p.m.
State guardsmen set up barricades on Shafter Taft highway and other oilfield roads. Drivers will need passes issued by Kern County Sheriff to travel through high pressure fields, with passes obtainable at Bakersfield Sheriff Office. Barricades also placed at key bridges and installations in California oil regions.
A number of Shafter sportsmen plan trips tomorrow and over the weekend for the trout season opener. Kern River waters and tributaries in Kern and Tulare counties will be the main targets for local anglers seeking trout.
