Shafter city council adopted a resolution opposing using a camp near the harvest area for housing Mexican nationals. Robert Goodin of Kern County Housing Authority said permission would be denied if requested. He noted health regulation concerns and protests from local residents and growers.
The piece notes juveniles who broke into Rio Bravo and Richland schools, vandalized walls, and stole from drawers then arrested, with expectations they will be released in two weeks. It urges a stricter law and reports on road work near Central avenues and Walker avenue, while praising a unanimous city council vote.
Five youths aged 13 to 17 from Shafter were arrested after breaking into Justesen's food market and stealing $85, liquor, beer, cigarettes, and four new cars. Cooperation between Shafter Police and California Highway Patrol led to arrests near Arroyo Grande on the coast within nine hours.
Dr Leonard Duck assistant district commissioner of the Kern County Boy Scouts says Shafter could form two more troops one explorer post and one cub pack if volunteers and sponsoring organizations are found. Those interested should contact Duck.
Richland school district presents a parent education class sponsored by the P T A on Tuesday May 1 1956 from 10:00 to 11:30 in Room 9 of the Richland Primary Building. Panel chairman Bruce Crawford will lead. Cafeteria supervisor Sylvia Baughman will explain meal planning and service. Nurse Agnes Theuer will outline child health services. Roy Farrell will discuss physical education and intramural sports praised by the state.
Tut Anderson is elected president of Shafter Rotary succeeding Phillip Clarkin. George Collins becomes secretary-treasurer and Dan Bledsoe and Collins Hath join three other directors on the board. Outgoing members are Collins and Dr O G Ohlsson. The new officers meet July 3 at the Cawelo motel dining room.
An off street parking program in Shafter underway at two downtown locations. City crew leveled and oiled Cen theater lots and will mark spaces for 125 cars. Parking on the lots will be free with owners’ consent. The superintendent urged longer visits to use the lots to keep street parking for in and out customers.
Funeral services were held for W. Smith 64 formerly of Shafter who died April 13 after a long illness. He lived in Paradise and Willows California for ten years. Survivors include widow Pearl B. Smith Paradise California son Ralph J. Smith Willows three daughters Mrs Clarence Neuman Shafter Mrs Emitt L. Soldin Juneau Alaska Mrs Alfred Mastenbrook Yuma Arizona two brothers Leo and Robert Smith Bakersfield and four grandchildren. The Neuman, Smith families thank friends in Shafter for flowers and condolences.
Mrs. Ross announces a contest to find the oldest mother at Rasco's ten cent store. Entries accepted through May 8 with three prizes, winners named May 10 and awards distributed May 12.
Jin Wilson and Bill Irvin announce the annual barbecue at Shafter High School starting at 6 with Herman Raina cooking the beef. The program runs 6:30 to 8:00 featuring the high school swing band Partain Sisters and Luiz Flores, open classrooms, a cake walk, class reunions, and an art exhibit. About 1000 people are expected.
Prospective managers and sponsors of Shafter Recreation Department's summer softball league are urged to attend a meeting at 7 30 p m May 7 at Richland school upper grade building Roy Farrell director announced A sponsors and managers meeting for the men s league will follow at 8 p m Practice begins May 20 with league play set for June Last year 37 teams and 600 players participated.
The Shafter City Council unanimously elected Adolf Kirschenmann to a fourth consecutive term as mayor. Newly sworn council members Marvin Lane and Richard Larson joined incumbent Robert Gates, with George Horshne to chair next term. Gates, Larson, Lane assigned as commissioners of parks, streets, sanitation and head of the volunteer fire department. Johnston remains city auditor.
Shafter High School Monarchs defeated Garces Rams 5 1 with Ernie Estavillo pitching and clutch team hitting. The Rams had seven hits and two errors, while Shafter totaled five runs and six errors. Last week Garces lost a slugfest to Corcoran 9 6, aided by Pete Rojas for Corcoran.
The Richland elementary school's annual spring concert continues with a 7:30 p.m. May 1 performance at the Primary cafetorium. Performers include the Richland Harmonettes under Martha Glocker, the Richland Muskteers under Richard Southwick, and the Richland band conducted by Robert Snively. Public invited with no admission charge.

Art Club Advisor David Marsh says the second annual High School art exhibit will run in the library from April 26 to May 10. He notes a larger number of paintings than last year, when 22 works were shown.
A May Day program will be presented in the patio at Richland Primary School on May 1 at 9 10 in the morning. All children of the school will take part in the affair. This has been an annual affair at the school.
