City records show Anderson Company forfeited a $4000 bid bond after rescinding its offer to start construction. The bid fell well below the city estimate of $50,532 and the next lowest bid of $57,011. Council discussed sidewalk and gutter work for Shafter’s south west east sections but made no decision. Vote set for April 11.
Legal conflicts surround the proposed contract between the Bureau of Reclamation and the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District. The attorney has studied the act and even traveled to Canada with it to aid the district. The Bureau has presented the agreement and a civil staffer accompanies the team to handle technical aspects. Vote April.
The Shafter City Council re opens bidding for a new police car after an eastern plant strike stalled delivery. Irvin Fike won the first bid at 790 dollars but could not delivery. New bids open April 10 with delivery deadline April 20.
The third annual Shafter Potato Festival will host a two day rodeo promoted by Cuff Burrell of Hanford. Six major Western events compete for a 1200 purse at Fuller Gun yards. The 20 30 Club runs concessions as a mounted drill team from Parilier performs plus clown acts and trick riders.
The Kern area committee notes a summer recreation program is under study. The 1950 camp committee chaired by Ernest Hunter met to outline the plan which includes a weekly day camp at Lowell Park in Bakersfield.
The Rev. Waldo Wiebe of the Mennonite Brethren Church will deliver the Easter SunriseService at Shafter High School athletic field. Worshippers from the community are expected to gather at sunrise for the sermon.
A giant Fairchild engraving machine was installed in the Shafter Press office to speed picture production, with the editor moved out to accommodate it and neon lights planned on the facade. The issue highlights 12 000 hens on Charles farm and a long-time subscriber renewal. The classified pages urge readers to use the listings for buying selling or trading.
The Shafter-Wasco Community Concert association announces a week of events from April 3 to 8 to promote visiting musicians. Robert Keefer of New York will address workers and the board. a film about Carnegie Hall will be shown at the dinner.
The Tuesday noon Rotary Club program featured two films shown by Fred Bryant. The first depicted the 1919 heavyweight championship fight where Jess Willard defeated Jess boxing rival. The second showcased highlights from the 1949 World Series with the New York Yankees defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Kern County Union High School District board approves an agriculture building on the school farm near Shafter High School. Estimated at $120,000 the facility will include a farm mechanics shop and agriculture instruction quarters to support rising enrollment and housing needs. Superintendent Theron L. McCuen cites growing enrollment as a reason for the project.
The Shafter City Council voted to grant an additional 500 feet of hose to the fire department bringing total hose length to 3400 feet. Fire Chief Al Finkbeiner said the longer line ensures crews can dry one line after a fire without rewinding.
The festival marks a field dedication as part of the third annual potato festival. The airport will be dedicated during the Kern County Soaring Society glider meet on Sunday May 21, the second day of the celebration.
Ted Bass of the state department of education spoke on "The Four Rs" at the Shafter Kiwanis Club yesterday noon. Bass noted that the relationship between teachers and students is a key factor in education, with Bert Ware presiding as club president and Roy Farrell serving as program chairman.
Filing deadline for the Shafter Public Utility District trustees race is April 15. Only incumbent Glenn O Nay has declared intent to run for re election. Election set for May 2, announced secretary Frank G Shaw.
Farmers faced weather risks as spring rain and frost affected crops. Some planted early to chase early market prices while others waited for water to reach thirsty soil. A few benefited from rain aiding potato sprouts, while cotton sprouts varied. One unidentified farmer lucked into an early, high price for potatoes.
Donna Dalke 18 year old Bakersfield College sophomore opens the third annual Shafter Potato Festival queen contest sponsored by the Shafter Rotary Club. Contestants compete in the 18 to 25 age bracket for queen honors with votes tied to barbecue ticket sales and a seven day bonus scoring scheme. May 20 note from Mrs Ed Brown committee chair reports.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce holds O. T. Olsen Day with Olsen as guest speaker noon tomorrow. Olsen leads Richland School, retiring in June after 22 years, during which district enrollment grew from 400 to 1790 students with 60 teachers and new facilities including a cafeteria and a large aquatic center.
Shafter workers begin final cleanup as Kern County Red Cross fund drive nears its halfway goal of 75000 dollars. Jean Chambers reports Buttonwillow topped its 500 dollar goal last weekend while Delano reaches 91 percent of its 3250 dollar quota.
Agriculture leaders from Shafter and Kern County are asked to attend a noon Monday roundtable at Hotel El Tejon Bakersfield. Russell Kennedy, manager of the California Co operative Association, will speak on Public Relations for Agriculture.
