David Cooke Named Superintendent of Richland District

David Cooke Jr returns to Richland Elementary as superintendent after serving as assistant superintendent at Greenfield Elementary since 1961. He succeeds Bruce Crawford who resigns at end of the school year. Cooke, married with four sons, lives at 272 Pine Street Shafter and met his wife in France during World War II.

Water Lines Completed In Local Tract

Lewis Carroll reports Shafter Public Utility District completed repair work at the disposal plant and tied in water mains from Euclid to Commercial Drive Elm Street East Lerdo and Manuel. The crossing of Central Valley Highway and a Santa Fe underpass were finished. The district will drill a new well on high school property once steel arrives. Christensen resigns from City Council planning commission due to other commitments.

Annual Smorgasbord By PTA Is Tuesday

The Shafter High School PTA Smorgasbord is set for Tuesday April 18 to raise funds for the high school scholarship. Committee heads include Mr and Mrs Robert Warren and ticket chairman Mrs Jack Nikkel. Frank Johnson will barbecue turkeys in an open pit as last year. The event ties to National Education Week with open house for parents and students.

City writes new fire department numbers and street work plan

The City Council learned of a new telephone system for the Fire Department with updated fire call numbers 746-3941 746-3942 while old lines 746-4378 remain temporarily. Business lines stay 746-2934 not for reporting fires. Council also eyed West Lerdo street improvements and instructed Lewis Carroll to consult Reiker Tract property owners about sharing costs. Shafter Pioneer Cornelius Nightingale Dies at 73

Cornelius Nightingale 73 of 30171 Riverside Drive died after a heart attack Saturday in Wasco Hospital. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Agee Family Funeral Home with Pastor M. E. Heinrich officiating. Burial followed at Shafter Memorial Park with Wasco Lodge 583 F&AM graveside rites. Family pioneer of Shafter.

Kern County Art Festival Opens April 1 at Shafter Memorial Hall

The 19th Kern County Art Festival District 1 opens Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Shafter Memorial Hall with 300 pictures on display. Adult artists and school reps deliver works March 30. adjudication is March 31 with three visiting judges.

Thomas Kelly Dies at 92 After Brief Illness and Accident

Thomas Kelly, 92, died Easter morning after a brief illness following an accident that broke his hip. Born in Manchester on March 6, 1875, he rose from orphanage work to athletic fame with Bolton Wonders. He later moved to Canada, married Mary Ann Whitaker, and worked in California mines before retiring from Sherman Clay in San Jose. He was a self educated man with a deep interest in literature and music.

Brazil Study Group Hosted by Shafter-Wasco Rotarians

Rotary clubs of Shafter and Wasco hosted seven Brazilian business and professional men on an exchange arranged by Districts 528 in Los Angeles and 427 in Brazil. District Governor Jim Huber joined the visit, which included tours of the USDA Cotton Research Station in Shafter and the Bioform Plant in Wasco, followed by a steak barbecue at Dr. John Revell’s home.
