In a postwar reflection, Shafter’s rapid growth since 1945 is attributed to pushing youth to leadership roles. The letter argues a lack of a conservative old guard fuels progress and that young leaders meet community needs like water, housing, jobs, and recreation, proving American communities can achieve the impossible.
Regular Shafter Rotary meeting at noon at Cawelo Motel with President Glenn Nay presiding. S. R. Smith of Washington DC, representative of the U S Department of Agriculture Fruit and Vegetable Division, spoke last week on the farm support price program. He noted the nation faces an agricultural economy crisis and that the program has grown as crops increase. Smith is touring the area and was guest of John Peters, who introduced him as program chairman.
Entries from grammar schools in the district compete in the four division Potato Festival Poster Contest. Judging will occur at the Shafter Community Art Association meeting on April 21. Entries are due by April 18 with cash prizes per school and a grand award from all schools.
Entomologist Lester Gibson clarifies misread figures from a city council session on spraying Sycamore trees in Shafter. He cites 300–400 trees total, about 1.25 dollars per tree, with total cost not exceeding 600 dollars for all Sycamores, and notes Wasco’s recent example.

Residents enjoyed a Sunday night dance at the Spanish Colony social hall owned by Pablo Heredia. Red and green streamers formed a canopy over the dance floor. A six piece band played on a platform at the hall's south end.
Senior girls from the high school participated in the annual Girls Career Day sponsored by the Business and Professional Women's Club. A preceding panel discussed education beyond high school, career options for women, and employer expectations with students and local professionals.
Shafter tested portable Auxiliary Automatic Traffic Signals on Central Avenue at the Central James and Central Manzer intersections for a 24 hour period. The unit requires winding daily, has no wiring, and costs 285 dollars per signal. Local officials will review the demonstration for potential purchase at the upcoming council meeting.
The Shafter High School PTA held its March meeting electing officers for the coming year. New president is Mrs Clyde Zachary with Mrs Robert C Sturges as vice president and Ruth Hilbert as secretary. Joe Frizzell received a life membership as an honor.
The Automobile Club of Southern California urges motorists to inspect front axles and wheels when abnormal wear appears on front tires. Early checks can reveal issues likely to affect front wheel alignment and driving safety.
A large crowd is expected at the Woman's Clubhouse tonight for a demonstration of oil painting by Sam Hyde Harris, president of the San Gabriel Artists' Guild and noted oil painter. A reception at Motel Cawelo precedes the event. inquiries to Art Hemingson at 671 or 5623.
Shafter 20 30 Club members and four guests met at Motel Canelo. Moquist reported on scholarship fund procedures and the proceeds from a recent benefit basketball game. Plans discussed included a rodeo publicity chairman, operating a concession at the rodeo, and Porterville International Night on April 9.
Robert Tosh 69 of Shafter fully recovered from minor injuries after a March 13 head on crash on Highway 99 a mile south of Greenfield. Tony Garcia 22 of Los Angeles suffered scalp lacerations and possible collarbone fracture while John De La Cruz 19 of Santa Monica had facial cuts.
The Western Theme Committee asks Shafter residents to wear Western or old fashioned attire for the month leading to the Potato Festival. Kick off is April 18 with store fronts and Central Avenue decorations to match. Beards contest planned with prizes. some residents may be briefly "arrested" by local Vigilantes in a playful street enforcement.
The Warren Decorating Company of Fresno has been retained by the Potato Festival Committee to decorate the town for the big celebration. Decor includes banners signs and trappings with rules against contacting local merchants for separate decorations. Street decorations will be erected by the Potato Festival Co within a few weeks.
Plans for the monthly Teen Age dance by Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 American Legion proceed. Committee chair N F Blackie Waymire said the event at the Woman's Club House begins at 9 pm with Gene Guenther and Rem Bristow assisting. Music by Bill Earley plus Bill Elliott KERO radio announcer as master of ceremonies promise a top notch evening for Shafter youths. A door prize is secured and to be announced.
The Assembly of God Church women sponsor a food sale on Friday March 25 starting at 2 pm in front of the Post Office Market on James Street.
Elmer Anderson was a business visitor in Los Angeles on Friday for meetings with local firms and potential partners. He toured facilities and discussed investment opportunities.
W A Connell of Shafter learns of his father J R Connell’s death in Wolfe City Texas. The 88 year old retired rancher had lived in Wolfe City since 1886 and is survived by three grandchildren including Bill and Maurice Connell of Shafter and Mary Helen Hughit of Buttonwillow.
Pfc Elmer Vernon Holland left Shafter after visiting his parents Mr and Mrs T L Holland. He had been stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base Wichita Falls Texas and is now reassigned to Cheyenne Wyoming.
Kern County union district launches a multi community occupational survey to map employment needs and guide high school and junior college education. A 55 firm preliminary study begins this week with 5 000 employers to be mailed after April 15.
