Shafter Transit Expands Services With Low Fare Increase
Shafter upgrades its two transit systems Dial-a-Ride and Shafter Shuttle under a state funded program. Fare changes take effect April 1 1983 raising regular one way to 60 cents and seniors handicapped and youth to 35 cents with free service for four and under beyond the Dial-a-Ride zone at 75 cents. Free service day set for April 16 Health Fair. Routes are operated by Dora Estrada and Larry Toews with City Hall dispatch by Thelma Cornejo.

Pat Kelly, longtime Kern County leader, dies at 80
H W Pat Kelly a Shafter resident and Republican Assemblyman for the 39th district from 1950 to 1959 died at 80 after a short illness in a Bakersfield hospital. He was active in civic groups from Rotary to Boy Scouts and left a varied career in education coaching real estate and public service. A memorial service was held in Bakersfield and cremation followed at Stanford University.

Shafter Board Delay on Recreation Complex EIR Approval
The Shafter Recreation and Parks District Board voted to adopt resolution No 83 3 10 deferring a recreation complex joint powers agreement until contract clarifications are met The board allocated funds to Kern High School District to prepare an Environmental Impact Report and Chairman Larson will coordinate EIR costs All members supported the resolution and motions while citizens opposed the project urged caution.

The Shafter City Council approved Ordinance 299 allowing bingo with eligibility for tax-exempt groups and churches, licenses valid one year or one day, prizes capped at 250 dollars, and rules on hours and age. Richland School Spring Concert Promises Wide Musical Variety
The Richland School music department will present its annual Spring Concert Thursday evening March 24 at 7 30 P M in the primary cafeteria. Intermediate and junior high choirs and bands perform a diverse program including a Renaissance madrigal authentic dancers calypso rhythms folk songs New York New York The Candy Man Fame and Laverne and Shirley in about one hour. Choir director Mark Reppert says the musicians have worked hard and aim to provide an enjoyable and surprising evening.
