Shafter Recreation District delays vote on high school complex

After citizen input and a looming lawsuit, the Shafter Recreation and Park District adjourned its meeting without action on an 11.8 acre recreation complex at Shafter High School. A new session is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. to review an Environmental Impact Report amid opposition from the Shafter Citizen Action Group and concerns about funding and security.

Winter Sports Awards Banquet Honors Shafter Athletes

Shafter High School hosted the Winter Sports Banquet with 300 plus attendees praising basketball, soccer and wrestling teams. Principal Herb Neufeld lauded community support as coaches and athletes received letter awards, MVP honors, and team citations after post banquet meetings.

Shafter Fest seeks theme for May Celebration

The Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival held its first planning meeting at City Hall last Tuesday. General Chairman Ben Grundy praised turnout and interest while seeking a festival theme tied to Shafter's Seventieth Anniversary. A new 3 and 6 kilometer Fun Run debuts this year. The next meeting is March 22 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Richland School Board presents counter to teachers and staff contracts

The Richland Board counters the Richland Teachers Association and Classified Staff proposals citing unknown funds. It offers no across the board raise, proposes longer days with 8 hours and 30 minute lunch, and outlines $89,600 in new costs plus $5,500 benefits and projected health rises. Chamber Opposes Oil Severance Tax In Local Meeting

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce opposed the severance tax on oil production, supporting Assemblyman Don Rogers. The secretary was told to send position letters to state legislators and Attorney General Van de Kamp. John Conley was named to fill Herb Howell’s unexpired term on the Chamber board as a committee examined Kern County’s economic impact.
