Grim facts of unemployment and seasonal work shortages drive a local campaign to ensure no child goes hungry. Residents contemplate a broader effort to feed all willing workers and families, as migration to the San Joaquin area rises and the need grows.
Kern County residents are urged to take advantage of prepayment for medical surgical and care during Voluntary Insurance Week proclaimed by Mayor Joe Frizzell. The observance highlights voluntary guarantees of high service standards at the lowest cost to the greatest number of citizens with H H Voth and Dr Harold among the sponsoring figures.
Ludwig J. Kirschenmann, a longtime Shafter resident and early potato industry pioneer, died Friday at 76. Services were held at the German Reformed Church with burial in Shafter cemetery. Surviving wife Christina. sons Adolf Emil Ed Henry. daughter Mrs W C Handel. numerous relatives including brothers, sisters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He arrived in Shafter in 1900s after earlier years in Russia and California, and helped establish farming and potato cultivation in the region.
Esther Eckert was an overnight guest at her sister Mrs. Leah Wolfe’s home in Bakersfield on Wednesday.
Week end visitors at the Vernon Kroeker residence were Mr. and Mrs. Dick Kleiner and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jost, all from Reedley.
The Richland P T A calls for last minute food donations to the main building office for baskets aiding children and parents in need. It notes widespread agricultural hardship along the coast and praises Shafter’s strong response as of now. Remember to deliver donations before noon tomorrow.
Shafter V a jockey horse owned by Sam Lachenmaier and Henry Guidera placed first at Bay Meadows last week. The gelding has run four races since purchase, three at Santa Anita and one at Bay Meadows, all finishes in the money. Early Snack, another Lachenmaier Guidera entry, has won at Santa Anita and is now at Bay Meadows.
Shafter residents are urged to cooperate as Clean-up Week runs from yesterday through Saturday night. City crews will collect refuse, sweep streets, and paint areas behind the city hall as part of a town-wide cleanup effort.
The Shafter Ministerial Association sponsors six Holy Week services with three master services led by Rev. Bruner Rev. Seago and Rev. Wiebe in Nazarene Pentecostal and Mennonite churches. Local churches host each service with an outside minister preaching and offerings benefiting Released Time Religious Education.
Isaac Kroeker 52 of McFarland died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday morning at 4 00. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 00 p.m. at Mennonite Brethren Church in Shafter. He was the son of Dr A T Kroeker of Shafter and is survived by wife Stella and daughter Ines, two sisters Marie Kliever of Selma and Mrs Abe Klassen of Dinuba, and brothers Abe Kroeker and Pete Kroeker with other brothers mentioned.
Ray Taylor of Bakersfield was named District Governor of Rotary International District 106 succeeding H. W. Kelly. The Stockton conference drawn 1228 Rotarians and spouses featured speakers, music, and a Pepperdine College president among attendees. Taylor to take office July 1.
Central Valley Highway Association holds its quarterly dinner at 7 30 pm at Cawelo Motel hosted by Shafter Chamber of Commerce. Chester A James Kern County planning engineer speaks on county road program with state aid under the Collier Burns bill. Reports cover Bakersfield to Selma route via Shafter Wasco Corcoran Hanford and push to add the Central Valley Highway to the state system.
Cases before Judge E K Grant include Horace Dawson jailed for two years for a narcotics offense. Howell sentenced to 180 hours with 90 days suspended after a disturbance at Smiths Corner. Roy Pate fined 50 dollars with 90 days suspended for a year on battery. Luther Barnett jailed 30 days with 30 days suspended. his wife Nedra Barnett given 30 days suspended with county exile. Joe Herrera arrested for disturbing the peace and displaying a deadly weapon in a separate county case.
William Frank Hamilton, 79, longtime Shafter resident since 1922, died Sunday in a Bakersfield hospital. He will be buried in Shafter Cemetery after services at Flickinger Janzen Mortuary at 2 p.m. Elder Buddie Harrison to officiate. Born June 24, 1868 in Louisiana. survived by wife Annie Hamilton.
Mrs George Harrison hosted a social event honoring Mrs Frazier, with attendees noting the guest’s long community service and gracious hospitality. The gathering highlighted Mrs Frazier’s contributions and featured remarks from local figures praising her dedication.
Nadine Conner, Metropolitan Opera soprano, headlines Wasco Community Concerts at the high school auditorium this Thursday at 8 15 p m. The concert closes the season for four programs and spotlights a renowned recital and radio artist with acclaimed roles including Mimi and Marguerite.
Mrs. George Wright presented an oil and watercolor display plus wood carvings at the Wednesday Afternoon Club meeting. Wright and his wife contributed notable works. roses from her garden and An Old Mill in Louisiana drew praise. Mrs. Al Eckman organized the exhibit with Ruth Hilbert from the high school art department intro.
Dalke Brothers awarded the contract for the Schirmer Building on James Street Herbert Schirmer announced the project starts immediately. The brick ultra modern business block will have four store units at the corner of James and Pacific Streets, fronting James Street and expanding the Central district southward.
