Speech before Congress asserts America will resist Soviet expansion with all its strength. The speaker argues postwar prosperity did not end tensions and calls for mobilizing a greater force than in prior wars to curb Russian aggression without triggering total war.
The Wasco 1948 Community series nears its finale with soprano Conner, famed for La traviata and Don Giovanni, performing Thursday night in the Wasco school auditorium at 8 15 p m. The recital spots a rising operetta star from the coast and draws audiences from Shafter Wasco McFarland and nearby towns. Further details and a photo will appear in Tuesday’s Press edition.
In the Klamath Falls Koppock Bay project, two Shafter veterans were among 44 nationwide winners of free irrigated farms valued around $20,000 each. Irvin Earl Duerksen and Jack Wendell Williams, both long associated with Shafter, will receive farms of 60 to 95 acres. Duerksen farms potatoes cotton and alfalfa, Williams grows potatoes cotton and grain with his father-in-law John Fox.
Early Tuesday, a 35 by 50 foot storefront at 686 Santa Fe in North Shafter burned to total loss. William R. McClatchy owned the Factory, which also sold used furniture. Firefighters from Shafter, Wasco, and the airport battled high winds. Don Wagner sustained burns to his left hand.
Shafter received .38 inch of rain in the latest storm with .17 inch measured Wednesday at the U. S. Experimental Farm. The season total reached 2.22 inches, compared to 3.70 inches by this date last year.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce considers erecting a 7 by 15 foot two faced sign near Lerdo on county property to direct traffic to Shafter Airport and highlight its history as a former Army base. Bids from Vincent Sign Co. and Shafter Maintenance Co. include painting mounting and concrete posts. A report on site availability and final plans will be given at today’s meeting at Shafter Motel.
Stanley Jones and Frank Stinnett of the Bureau in Bakersfield explained water and soil testing in the Shafter-Wasco area ahead of possible Central Valley Project water negotiations. Jones showed aerial photos of sandy soil streaks and alkali land west of Shafter, plus dam and canal views, and noted well tests and vegetation plots at Minter Field to curb weed buildup.
Three Shafter sportsmen Ralph Tucker Harold Garrish and Roland Bergen narrowly escaped a shipwreck off Morro Bay when their motor launch ran out of fuel. A fourth member Al Myer piloted from Bakersfield. Garrish swam ashore, spent the night in a deserted house, and arrived in Morro at dawn. A Morro Bay plane located the boat and a rescue launched with fuel. The men endured about twenty hours without food or water.

Mrs. John Brown of Arcata visiting Mrs. Katherine Peters fell down a flight of stairs causing bruises and shock. She recovered enough to be up and around the next day.
Three Dos Palos gins processed 9056 bales in the past season. The output reflects steady capacity across the Merced area and highlights activity at local facilities.
Next week, Monday through Saturday, Shafter holds Clean-up and Paint-up Week. The City Council urges all citizens to tidy premises and yards, place trash for the garbage service in proper containers, and stack nonserviceable debris for pickup by a city truck in the alley.
Department men clean alleys and vacant lots in the business district and will continue until all are cleared. Officials urge residents to paint homes and business buildings to improve town appearance as paint becomes available locally.
Adolph Kirschenmann secures permits for three more homes on Cross Street as part of a major tract expansion. Rayne Mettler will build thirteen houses in total for Kirschenmann, while George Vannatta completes five and begins five more. Nearby, Bill Goertzen constructs five houses in the Kelly and Channeson tract and Dalke Brothers finish several homes.

Mr and Mrs Jack Neumann and Mr and Mrs Fred Wise of Madera visited friends in Shafter last Saturday reflecting social ties in the region.
Grape producers will meet Tuesday at 2 00 p m in the Delano High School Auditorium to hear marketing orders proposed for most shipping grapes. Mr A Setrakian of Fresno and W Perelli Minetti of the Belano Farm Center outline the programs amid rumors and seek concrete information for Tulare and Kern counties growers. Mr Venstrum of the Farm Bureau will discuss the orders and offer an unbiased outlook. all growers are urged to attend.
