Mr and Mrs Gordon Haycock travel by car on Monday for a business trip that will extend as far as Oregon.
Mrs Harold Pinkham and her son cphen arrived Thursday to visit her parents Mr and Mrs Illiam Lowe.
Richland P T A welfare committee delivered twenty baskets to the neediest families in the Shafter district amid overwhelming public response. The drive uncovered severe destitution including a tent dwelling with eight children and no food or warmth. about $200 in food and cash was raised and more drives are planned.
About sixty members and guests of the Central Valley Highway Association met at Cawelo Motel for a banquet and reports on progress toward building and improving the Central Valley Highway. Charles Chambers of Hanford presided. attendees included officials from Kern Kings Tulare and Fresno counties and local government and chamber representatives.
The report notes 38 inches recorded at the U S Experimental Farm, bringing the season total to 1.74 inches, compared with 3.92 inches on the same date last year.
Shafter residents joined Wasco audiences for the Wasco Community Concert finale. The event showcased opera star Nadine Conner, a renowned vocalist, in the season’s closing performance.
The 2030 Club laid plans at a Wednesday meeting for a May 22 dance at the Canelo Motel. O D Handel and Greg Malory led ticket sales while Jerry Adams Orchestra will provide music. Proceeds fund children’s party, restrooms, and Shafter potato promotion at the 2030 Convention in Santa Catalina Island.
The Easter Sunrise Service will be held at sunrise on the high school athletic field, the fifth annual united event organized by six cooperating churches now nine ministers strong. About 300 to 400 people are expected, with Rev. B. E. Andrews of the First Baptist Church delivering the sermon. A Holy Week pre Easter series and a released time religious education program for hundreds of local children accompany the observance.
Local physician Dr. Ohlsson urges prepaid voluntary health insurance to curb rising medical costs. He warns buyers to ensure free choice of doctor and hospital, a broad physician panel, and policies issued by solid state or national insurers with strong reserves and claims-paying ability.
Southern Pacific Railroad employee Claude Wykes showed the hour long color film This is My Railroad to Shafter Rotary at Cawelo Motel on Tuesday. The documentary re created railroad work from construction to repair and maintenance including freight and passenger service. Newell, the program chair, introduced the event.
W. R. Woollomes of Delano announces candidacy for re election to the Kern County Board of Supervisors representing the first district. He is in his 20th year as supervisor and has served nine years as board chairman including seven consecutive. Supporters from Wasco McFarland and others file nomination petitions and back his bid. Woollomes has represented Kern before state commissions and congressional groups on water development.
Mrs. Inez Frownie, recently living in the south, called on Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ruhlman at their home. She is originally from Portsmouth Ohio.
Plans were made to honor Melvin O. Luker, first Shafter combat casualty return, with a memorial day and final burial in his home cemetery. Luker, of the 5th Marine Division, died on Iwo Jima March 14, 1945, after being raised in Shafter and serving as a rifleman overseas. His family in Shafter includes widow Verna and two young children, Janice Kay and Donald Obern Luker. The memorial day, likely next week, will pay tribute to Shafter World War II veterans killed in action and be proclaimed soon with details to follow in the Press.
The Shafter Red Cross drive has raised only 461 dollars, about 15 percent of the 3289 dollar community quota, collected at Bank of America. Ed Warren, chairman, urged workers not yet contacted to deliver their contributions or contact him now.
The Mennonite Brethren Church Choir of about 50 members will perform The Holy City by A. R. Gaul on Easter Sunday at 7 30 p m under Arnold Bergen with Miss Helen Schellenberg at the organ and Miss Alice Nikkel at the piano The oratorio blends spiritual and inspirational themes in two parts and invites public attendance.
The Chamber of Commerce announced today that the noon meeting is canceled due to Good Friday. Regular meetings will resume next week with a concerted attendance drive planned by the local Chamber to address several important matters.
Mrs. Byron Hanson entertained her bridge club Tuesday evening at her home. Guests included Mesdames Frizzell Ruhlman Roscamp Lowe Stringham Rootes Cooper and Battaglia. Prizes were awarded to Ruhlman Roscamp and Rootes.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club reports that under Ellis Howen guidance an oil painting is being prepared by a member of each class for the club in appreciation. Works include birch and lake scenes by Mrs. John Jacobsen and Mr. Harry Sturm, with other pieces by Irene Perkins and Roger Holt. The Richland classes start in April and Shafter plans future exhibits and an art study group.
