Legion prepared to fight California court over pledge
The National American Legion plans to file a brief with the U S Supreme Court backing a federal appeal overturning a nine circuit ruling that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is unconstitutional because of the words under God The Legion vows to defend students right to recite the pledge and restore the phrase while noting prior briefs were denied The case stems from Michael Newdows lawsuit alleging a state teacher leads students in a ritual proclaiming there is a God and that ours is one nation under God The pledge was amended in 1954 under Eisenhower and the Legion claims the decision harms national identity
