Buttonwillow elects Patsy Quary as fourth woman mayor
At the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner in Buttonwillow the election resulted in Patsy Quary winning with 52 964 votes. Four other candidates and their supporters entertained around a 99 926 10 cent vote tally and a power politics theme. The event featured campaign skits with oil country humor and a large crowd of about 500 attendees.

James Dickens a fifth grader from Richland School was invited by the Shafter Chamber to ride Amtrak on its first Bakersfield to Oakland run. The group planned a Fresno or Hanford start with stops at Merced Riverbank Stockton Martinez and Bakersfield. Richland Trustees Deny Personal Necessity Leave
After lengthy discussion on Monday night Richland trustees refused an eighth grade teacher R Jackson Scott personal necessity leave to accompany his wife to Washington DC. Scott sought March 27 to April 7 with three paid days and offered to cover a substitute for the remaining two. The board noted leave is for emergencies and denied the request as excessive.
