Shafter city council aims to fill Planning Commission vacancy at the April meeting with two applications already received. Deadline for new applications is two weeks. contact City Clerk Dolores Robinson for forms. The next council meeting is March 24 at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
Richland School District RSD met at 7 30 p m in the Music Building with seventh grader Jeff Mettler reading his NASA sent essay on the space shuttle tragedy. The board heard concerns praise for bilingual program improvements and discussed foggy day cancellations and LEP student needs.
Women’s History Week observed in Shafter with a March 8 tea at the Depot Museum from 2 to 4 pm. Fifty plus visitors viewed displays by Deanna and Pat Bryant and other women artists while Kirk Lollar and Nelson hung art. The traveling exhibit arrived via Stan W and Dwayne and Sandy Armstrong. The Shafter Historical Society and Shafter Woman's Club sponsored the tea.
The Shafter Police Department confirms two women officers Ferrelene Zachary an investigation officer with over ten years on the force and Jamie Townsend who joined in 1985. Both are among ten sworn officers. Four women work as dispatchers and civilian roles include community service officer. The Shafter Press apologizes for the earlier misunderstanding.
The Shafter street department maintains 29 miles of streets 15 miles of alleys and 50 miles of curbs gutters and sidewalks. Major duties include street sweeping storm drainage decorations striping crosswalks and year round maintenance. The department has three fulltime employees and two summer temporary workers. The total budget this year is 153354 with 74249 for labor 22020 for fuel and parts 47150 for street lighting 8847 for insurance and 1088 for traffic safety signs. Grants fund storm drains and downtown Central Avenue reconstruction.
