Woodlake won 26 to 20 after a late rushing touchdown, with Bob Mettler filming key scoring plays and shots of Shafter players. President Jack Hill led the meeting as guests Sam Becker Bill Edgerton Bill Frizell and John Ware attended. The club sang to Bert Ware on his 74th birthday.
The report details multiple arrests by city and county police over a busy weekend. Patrick O Malley, 53, of Texas, faces two drunkenness charges with $50 fines and 60 day suspended sentences. Other individuals, including Gunnard Lempinen, John Harrison Farmer, Wilbur Thomas, Bryan Blansett, Ed Holmes, Thomas Ridge and Della Ridge, Virgil Trantham, James Newland, Dale Freeman, Lyndell Tyler, and more, receive varying fines and suspensions for drunkenness vagrancy and related offenses. Five men entered mayoral city council races before the noon deadline. The five candidates listed in filing order are Robert McClain Frank Russell Earl J Johnson Glenn Nay and Dan L Loewen for three expiring seats. Lincoln Goddard filed for city treasurer as the sole candidate for that post.
The LaSierra College Band directed by Clarence O. Trubey performed a Saturday evening program at the Church. The 36 member ensemble was sponsored by the Home and School organization of Kern Academy and thereafter stayed with local church families during their Shafter visit.
A three member advisory committee presented to the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District board a plan to curb sinking underground water by securing Central Valley project water. The report calls for forming Kern County Water Agency, using a mix of pumped, Friant first class, and Friant second class water, and a closed conduit system to protect land values and stabilize costs.
A midnight blaze at the Bayless Cafe & Malt Shop caused about 25 dollars in damage to an ice cream cabinet motor, reportedly from overheating. County firemen from Shafter responded, while another brush fire at Marengo and Nickel was quickly controlled with no violations.
Kern County residents prepare for a Week of Rededication honoring the American Heritage program culminating with the Freedom Train in Bakersfield on Wednesday March 10. Events run March 3 to 9 with rallies, voter registration drives, and local performances by schools and towns.
