Shafter's town hoop team will compete in the county tournament, announced by manager Elmer Anderson. The locals are set to play at 8:00 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday nights at the East Bakersfield gym, likely against a Taft team.

McFarland High School defeated Tehachapi 32 to 19 on a neutral Shafter court to claim the Sierra Basketball League title and earn a chance to meet a similar small school champion from the upper valley. Towery led the Cougars with 12 points while B Davis added 10 as Tehachapi struggled with its shooting and fouls.
Participation by Shafter in the Kern County Baseball League this season is doubtful as district commissioner J. B. Haralson says a manager and sponsor are needed to start operations. Last season the Shafter Merchants under Mark Scales filled the slot, but reports say Scales cannot serve this year leaving the setup uncertain. A reorganization meeting is expected soon by local baseball enthusiasts.
Roy Packard and Paul Cato of Shafter High earned all Sierra honors this week. Packard was a first string guard and top scorer, while Cato secured a second string center spot. Both also received Kern all-star recognition for two-league honors.

Shafter Neufeld five falls from top to a tie for third in Wasco City League after two losses this week. The Trojans beat Neufeld 35 to 32 Monday and 35 to 27 Wednesday as Wasco outscored the locals in fast breaks. Bud Anderson and Vic Bender sparked the attack, with Anderson returning after fouling out to net several late baskets.
Shafter Hi Y basketball slipped 35 to 33 at home as Wasco Neuman Club edged the hosts in a tight contest. Wasco features include varsity newcomers and key scoring by Seales Rosales and J. Kelly, with Seaches Schroeder and Rankin contributing as well.
In a tight finish Pettus drives for a late basket and a free throw after the final whistle as Anderson leads with 15 points. Bender and Pettus each tally 10, Mayberry leads Shafter with 16 in the first half, and Neufelds Trojans top Crawford 38 35 with a strong second half defense.
