Joe Pressley pinned Parker’s Jim Poindexter in the 135 lb final to become Shafter’s first Valley Champion since 1974. He pinned all three opponents, earning the meet’s outstanding wrestler honor at Bakersfield. Pressley and Gomez advance to Southern Sectionals in San Diego. Shafter City Council designates March 6 to 12 1983 as Women s History Week with a proclamation signed by Mayor Loyd. Three new employees join the city workforce Louis Brown becomes a police officer while Brad Rude and David Martinez become Community Service Officers. The council approves a transfer of the Boy Scout building site to the city under an agreement with Kiwanis Rotary and the Recreation and Park District. The project supports a new senior citizen center. Public Works reports ten street lights can be replaced for 2590 dollars and 40 cents with 11 ballasts bought from Hub Electric Supply. Police Chief Hoffer outlines a voluntary fingerprinting program for children with a 2 dollar fee and parent signed cards to aid identification.

Three Vehicle Crash Injures Two at Shafter Intersection
A three car collision at Central Valley Highway and Lerdo Road Monday at 7 44 am injured two people. Rigoberto Sandoval and Gloria Sandoval of Wasco and Bakersfield resident Steven Darling suffered facial injuries. Gloria was cut free with the jaws of life. The Toyota Corolla was totaled. Sandoval was cited for failing to yield.
