School Swing Band to Debut at Spring Concert
The first swing band in Shafter High School history, named the Swinging Sergeants, will perform at the annual spring concert on April 6. Kenneth Fahsbender, the band director, says the 14 piece ensemble will join the 45 piece concert band for a program including Trombonic Rhapsody led by the trombone section and a featured Jim Daniels with three trumpeters Mary Suderman Gordon Pipkin and Noel Wilson. Spiritual Rhapsody will be a piano solo by Marlene Enns. The group has practiced for about a week and impressed KCASA at a February 23 meeting. The repertoire will trace a miniature history of swing in America.

Concertmen and baritone to sing at final Wasco concert
The Shafter Wasco Community Concert Association outlines its final 8:15 pm concert at Wasco High School auditorium. The Concertmen join bass-baritone Edmond Karlsrud for a program of art songs operatic scenes and folk songs with arrangements by Charles Touchette. Karlsrud, in his twenties, is noted for TV radio and concert work.

Fatal Crash Near Shafter Claims One Life
A 43 year old Lodi carpenter Joseph Wilson Colli jed was killed and his wife Lois 36 and two sons injured when his car collided with a Neufeld vehicle five miles north of Shafter at Scaroni and Merced Avenues. Neufeld driver Mervin Neufeld 18 uninjured. The highway patrol delayed naming the deceased pending notification.

Funeral Services Held Wednesday for William Schneider
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for William Carl Schneider 58 of Thomas Lane Shafter who died February 26 of a heart attack. Elder Harvey Retzer of the Seventh Day Adventist church officiated with interment in Shafter cemetery. Born December 15 1897 in Okeene Oklahoma he lived in Shafter nine years and was a representative of the International Narcotics Research Foundation. He formerly managed Schneider and Wikoff contractors. Survivors include widow Esther two sons William at Mc Clellan Air Force Base and Larry Lee of Shafter two daughters Dianna and Virginia Ann of Shafter two brothers Earl of Okeene Isaac of Prisca of Herman of Bakersfield and two sisters Amelia Sinner of Arroyo Grande and Louise Fox of Shafter.

Two Shafter High freshmen were arrested on suspicion of breaking into Richland Elementary two weeks earlier. They pried the Coke box, stole money and lunch tickets, and rifled office drawers. Marked tickets helped authorities catch them with aid from older youths.

Hit and Run Driver Fined for Scene Return
James Ligon, 23, of Wasco was fined 27 dollars after arrest on hit and run charges. He claimed a 15 year old Shafter High coed drove the car that struck a parked vehicle owned by Mrs Bertha Funk, then rammed the office building at Central avenue and Central Valley highway. Ligon left the scene, moved the wheel, abandoned the car in Rio Bravo district, and was later arrested after returning to the scene.
