Local officials report a split over continuing the May festival that honors Shafter area crops. The chamber and merchants seek volunteers to support the event while a rival faction questions its viability and timelines. Myron Tisdel and Wasco visitors are set to speak at chamber events.
The first swing band in Shafter High School history, named the Swinging Sergeants, will perform at the annual spring concert on April 6. Kenneth Fahsbender, the band director, says the 14 piece ensemble will join the 45 piece concert band for a program including Trombonic Rhapsody led by the trombone section and a featured Jim Daniels with three trumpeters Mary Suderman Gordon Pipkin and Noel Wilson. Spiritual Rhapsody will be a piano solo by Marlene Enns. The group has practiced for about a week and impressed KCASA at a February 23 meeting. The repertoire will trace a miniature history of swing in America.
The Shafter Wasco Community Concert Association outlines its final 8:15 pm concert at Wasco High School auditorium. The Concertmen join bass-baritone Edmond Karlsrud for a program of art songs operatic scenes and folk songs with arrangements by Charles Touchette. Karlsrud, in his twenties, is noted for TV radio and concert work.
A 43 year old Lodi carpenter Joseph Wilson Colli jed was killed and his wife Lois 36 and two sons injured when his car collided with a Neufeld vehicle five miles north of Shafter at Scaroni and Merced Avenues. Neufeld driver Mervin Neufeld 18 uninjured. The highway patrol delayed naming the deceased pending notification.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for William Carl Schneider 58 of Thomas Lane Shafter who died February 26 of a heart attack. Elder Harvey Retzer of the Seventh Day Adventist church officiated with interment in Shafter cemetery. Born December 15 1897 in Okeene Oklahoma he lived in Shafter nine years and was a representative of the International Narcotics Research Foundation. He formerly managed Schneider and Wikoff contractors. Survivors include widow Esther two sons William at Mc Clellan Air Force Base and Larry Lee of Shafter two daughters Dianna and Virginia Ann of Shafter two brothers Earl of Okeene Isaac of Prisca of Herman of Bakersfield and two sisters Amelia Sinner of Arroyo Grande and Louise Fox of Shafter.
Kern county deputy tax assessor E. T. Divine will be at Shafter city hall next week through March from 12 30 to 1 15 p m to sign up veterans for real and personal property tax exemptions The deputy assessor will be on duty Monday through Friday.
About 300 cub scouts from Shafter Rio Bravo and Maple prepare for the Blue and Gold banquet and training sessions at Richland cafe teria. Five packs join the event with Roger Bond and Gary from Channel 29 set to entertain. Training on Saturday includes den and pack meeting procedures with certificates for leaders who qualify.
Juke box operators contributed an additional 58.75 during juke box week raising the local March of Dimes total to 1409.75, said Fred Hasty, campaign chairman.
Kenneth Gray of Delano, commander of the Ninth district, announced a reorganization meeting for the Shafter post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars to be held Friday at Spa: Veterans Memorial Hall. Candidates may join or obtain applications from William Waits at the Shafter Press or at his home. Eligible members must have served overseas in time of war. The Shafter VFW, known as 788, has been inactive for the last three years.
The Shafter Generals finished tied for second in the South Le age league after a 51 24 loss to Corcoran. Wasco claimed the championship with a 6 2 record, while Shafter and Exeter each posted five wins and three losses.
A Kern County Union High School and Junior College district tax increase of 50 cents passed by 186 votes statewide 49,864 for to 47,98 against. Shafter narrowly rejected 212 to 202 while China Lake heavily supported 226 to 27. Overall 65,000 eligible voters. observers cited complacency among supporters as a factor. The new rate rises from 1.10 to 1.60 but may require only 20 cents next year. County canvass set for March 16 at 11 a.m. Consolidated precinct results varied by area with Buttonwillow 36-30 against and Lerdo 22-6 in favor.
Shafter High School junior varsity Col onels travel to Clovis Friday for the playoff final of the two Sequoia leagues. Clovis B won the North Sequoia title 7 1, while Shafter JV dominated the South Sequoia with an unbeaten mark. Coach Gaye Pare says the Col onels rely on height and steady foul shooting averaging 35 percent. Gene Lytle leads High scorer honors with strong followship from Glen Putman Jim Nix Kenny Lott Lauderdale and Arleigh Johnson. Rooters may join in Clovis trip.
The Shafter Heart Fund drive reports $354.27 collected Sunday in the door-to-door campaign. Chairman Robert Doss says total pledges bring the amount to $516.27 so far and that money in business-house containers awaits counting. He thanks volunteers and donors for their assistance.
Arthur H Jol Johnson, current McFarland High School principal since 1951, is named to succeed Grant W Jensen as Shafter High School principal. The appointment by Kern County Union High School District is effective July 1. Johnson, a Navy veteran and former Bakersfield College educator, will move with his wife Avis and their three daughters Karin Kristina and Andrea.
Two Shafter High freshmen were arrested on suspicion of breaking into Richland Elementary two weeks earlier. They pried the Coke box, stole money and lunch tickets, and rifled office drawers. Marked tickets helped authorities catch them with aid from older youths.
The Shafter Lions Club hosts its annual student contest with a $1500 scholarship for the winner and $500 for each of three runners up. The topic is Youth's Problems of Tomorrow and results will be announced after elimination rounds run by co chairs Richard Southwick and Reg.
James Ligon, 23, of Wasco was fined 27 dollars after arrest on hit and run charges. He claimed a 15 year old Shafter High coed drove the car that struck a parked vehicle owned by Mrs Bertha Funk, then rammed the office building at Central avenue and Central Valley highway. Ligon left the scene, moved the wheel, abandoned the car in Rio Bravo district, and was later arrested after returning to the scene.
Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield opens a new wing and invites all visitors to an open house Sunday from 11 to 5. The hospital auxiliary led by Mrs. Robert McClain of Shafter will conduct tours for guests.
