A local Heart Fund door to door drive aims to raise 3000 this year to fight heart disease. Volunteers will visit 15 to 25 homes each to collect funds for research education and community programs while supporting national heart efforts.

Jury rules John Fox not insane at death in probate

The will of John P. Fox, a Shaf ter grower who died March 1 1955 leaving $581 613, was admitted to probate. His two daughters claimed he was insane and under undue influence when he crafted the will seven days before his death. The court found he was not insane when he wrote the will.

Kern County District to Appoint New Principal Monday Night

The Kern County Union High School District board will hear a recommendation from District Superintendent T. R. McCuen regarding the appointment of a new principal from among district personnel. The chosen candidate will assume duties at Shafter High School in July, replacing Dr. Grant W. Jensen who moves to the proposed South High School of Bakersfield.

Union Congregational Church Plans $16000 Sunday School Annex

The Building Committee contracts Dalke Brothers to add a three room brick structure at the rear of the present building for the junior department junior high and high school departments. Bakersfield architects Stuhr and Hicks design the project set to begin immediately and finish for autumn opening. The new parsonage has been purchased and equipped with draperies linoleum and curtains as part of the church expansion.

Kite Contest At Richland School Grounds Friday

The Shafter Recreation Commission and Shafter Lions Club host a kite contest for all area children at the Richland School playground. Kites must be home made and judges will award trophies for largest smallest most beautiful and highest flying kites.

Tatum Robbins Win SHS Bank of America Awards

Two Shafter High School seniors Roger Tatum and Jack Robbins earned 1956 Bank of America achievement awards for science and liberal arts. Winners advance to district finals in Bakersfield with monetary prizes up to 1000 dollars. Other students received recognizing achievement in various subjects and civic leadership.

Counts Win Three Trophies In Races

The Counts drag racing club of Shafter captured three trophies at Famoso race course. They won in the C stock class twice and in the C gas class for modified engineers. Bill Replogle of the Bakersfield Smokers set a world record speed of 153.91 mph from a standing start on the quarter mile.

Final Rites Held For Mrs Harder

Funeral services for Agatha Harder were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 30 at the Mennonite Brethren church with Rev Waldo Wiebe officiating. A native of Russia, she came to Shafter in 1933 and lived at 639 Pacific Avenue. She died February 29 at age 76. Survivors include her husband Bernhard three sons Henry J of Covina Bernard S of Giendale and Menno N of Sacramento one daughter Martha of Anaheim one brother Ferys Unruh of Reedley one sister Kathryne Suderman of Pasadena and 11 grandchildren. Interment will be in Shafter cemetery with Armstrong Mortuary in charge.

Shafter and Wasco Chambers to Meet for Joint Lunch

Myron Tisdel Visalia businessman and Republican candidate will speak at a joint Shafter Wasco chamber lunch on Friday March 2 at Lee's drive in. He will avoid campaign politics and discuss Kids in the School drawing on his school board experience and PTA ties. Shafter High School Tax Increase Election Set

Voters in the Shafter area go to the polls Tuesday to decide if the Kern County Union High School and Junior College district maximum tax rate should rise from 1.16 to 1.60. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Shafter High School administration building. The proposal earmarks funds for expanded facilities to handle growing enrollment and is expected to raise about a $5 increase per $1000 of assessed value.

More than 100 student representatives from Kern County high schools gathered at Shafter High School for the Kern County Association of Student Representatives convention. Goertzen Building New Home On State Street

A permit has been issued to Goertzen for construction of a six room house at 604 State Street. Building inspector E. K. Grant says the home, valued at 16000 dollars, will have 1645 square feet of floor space.
