Sol A. Camp, owner of the trotter Scott Frost, will move his 35 to 40 horses from Del Mar to a new stable and racing track east of Shafter on Lerdo highway, near his Cawelo headquarters. He will train in Shafter and build a 60 acre home on site, with completion planned this fall.
Six contestants filed for the Mrs Shafter contest before the deadline on Saturday. Entries list Mrs Clifford Weaver Mrs Billy Thompson Mrs Ernest Erhardt Mrs John Notley Mrs Fred Klein and Mrs P S Hedeen with questionnaires due Monday to become official. The winner advances to Mrs Kern County competition with many prizes sponsored by Southern California Gas and the Chamber of Commerce.
Shatter High School freshmen in social science join city planning to map city lots by dwelling type. Jim Russell says work should end Friday. Maps color code categories like single family, two family, church, industry, school with area appraisals by blocks near students' homes.
The newly reorganized Shafter post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will elect officers and set dates for meetings. Kenneth Gray, Delano district commander, says the post started with 20 members and expects more. Interested persons should attend Monday’s meeting or contact Bill Waits at the Shafter Press or at his home, 133 Golden.
Shafter high school opened its season with a 6-3 win over Arvin High. Shafter scored in the second, fourth and fifth innings while holding Arvin to two runs in the second and none after the sixth. The game featured four Shafter errors and six by Arvin as Johnson and Gladden reached base and Mitchell and Nieto contributed offensively.
Merton L. Wiedmann of the Shafter Chamber announces the festival will return with professional help next year after this year’s cancellation due to time and worker shortages. Merchants back the idea, aiming for a 150 member chamber, while the American Legion plans a June carnival to cover a projected deficit.
Mrs. Dorothy E. Hale is appointed society editor of the Shafter Press, succeeding Mrs. Lorain Gaede. A Kenton High School graduate, she wrote the Green Thumb Column for two years and has contributed feature articles to Southern California and Arizona publications. She and husband O. Clay Hale live at 281 Golden West Avenue with their daughter Rosemary Ellen.

Geneva Jones 26 and her sister in law Mrs Jesse Jones 37 suffered first and second degree burns to the face arms and legs in a fire at 490 West Marengo street last Thursday. Firemen said they were washing clothes on the porch when gasoline on a tub ignited and Mrs Jesse Jones threw the flaming tub away. No serious damage to the house.
Red Cross drive opens today adapting schedule May 15 to July 15 to suit shop workers busy with potato harvest. A record 21 merchants attended the meeting as coordinators plan $2700 goal. donations may be left with employers or at the Bank of America or Shafter Press.
Visalia businessman Myron Tisdel urged Friday that California move to a 12 month school year and new building program. He spoke to 75 chamber members on Kids in the School, arguing for mass education reform and the use of master teachers and television to reach many classes.
The Hochins bloodmobile will be stationed at the Veteran Memorial hall in Shafter from 2 to 7 pm on March 14 to boost donations. Jack F. Janzen, secretary of the Shafter blood bank, announced the drive with the Ground Observer Corps overseeing the visit and refreshments provided by the Shafter Rotary club. The blood bank's supply is nearly depleted.
A February Heart Fund drive in Shafter raised a total of $672.71. Lead organizer Robert Dass reported a one day house to house canvass on Heart Sunday February 26 brought in $367.27. Plastic heart sales added $38.44 and advance gifts netted $267.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce proposes city council action to enforce a two hour limit in the downtown shopping area led by Vernon Ross president. A letter is sent requesting tagging of cars parked beyond two hours on Central Avenue to free space for shoppers.
The Shafter Colonels won the San Joaquin valley small schools title by beating Clovis High B 52 40. Shafter rallied from behind with a late foul line surge, scoring 20 of their 52 at the free throw line while Clovis made eight. Clovis led 24 19 at half and 35 34 late in the third, but lost three starters in the final period as Shafter seized clear dominance.
Ed Chilla, a Shafter High School senior, won the annual Lions Club speech contest held Wednesday night. A sophomore girl and a junior boy tied for second place, Karen Jensen and Jim Jackson, while judges Mortimore, Bob Bann, and Ross Harrington evaluated the entrants.
Assemblyman H. W. Pat Kelly of Kern County announced he will seek a fourth term in the California Assembly from the 39th district. He cites six years of service and focus on water, schools, agriculture, roads, fish and game, and the needs of Kern County as basis for reelection.
Kern County medical officials and local physicians announce a vaccination program with a $3 fee at all doctors offices for shots. Children who have not been immunized in the last three years should receive the vaccine promptly.

Harold Miller chairs the finance committee, with Mrs. Marvin Neuman as general women's chair. other Shafter residents serve on committees as the 12th and Knight of California host group. About 2,000 delegates will discuss marking merchandising research and related topics. the Western States Potato Growers Association meets concurrently at Bakersfield Inn. A highlight is Tuesday’s Harvey Auditorium address by three governors and the public is invited to attend.
Two teenage runaway boys from Fillmore, 15 and 16, were arrested within ten minutes of a radio alert Monday night. Patrolman Glenn Holt received the call at 7:30 p.m. and Officer Claude Mitchell located a matching automobile. Mitchell brought the youths to the station shortly after.
