City Council Advances 2.3 Million Budget and New Fees
The City Council adopted a 2.3 million dollar budget for 1983 84 with cuts in administration planning and fire services. A user fee may take effect January 1 1984 to balance costs for sewer and garbage services while public hearings will be held on a proposed project. Fire Chief Carl Williams was appointed as Shafter Fire Chief per resolution 723.

Police bust drug dealer in Shafter linked to juveniles burglaries
The Latter Police Department arrested 23 year old George Robert Rodriguez of 164 Beth Eden Shafter after seizing cocaine PCP amphetamines marijuana and paraphernalia June 15. A no knock search followed an undercover stop that exposed drug traffic at his residence and led to additional burglaries at A 1 Superette and Dari Delite by youths ages 10 to 13. Police say 35 to 40 people per hour visited the residence and that juveniles burglarized video machines taking cash candy meat cigarettes calculators gloves and other items. Investigations continue with two burglaries tied to juveniles and a preliminary hearing set for June 29.

Legion fireworks booth to aid local youth in Shafter

Muster team sets state record in motored hose wagons
The Shafter Volunteers Muster Team went undefeated on the Southern California Muster circuit and set a new state mark with a 1942 GMC. Fire Chief Bob Thompson reported at the council meeting. As Southern California champions, they will receive a trophy at an awards banquet and later face Northern California champions at Dixon for the state final. The team’s circuit appearances in Morro Bay, Santa Barbara, Exeter, Ontario, Arcadia, Bakersfield, and Virginia City promote the city statewide, and the council may donate to the Seagraves Restoration Fund in their honor after coordinating needs with the Master Team.

During a Kern County visit on June 23 Governor Deukmejian pledged to balance the budget and boost education while holding 1983-84 spending near current levels. He urged welfare changes to fund K-12, noting a 900 million deficit and a 23 billion revenue forecast with 22 billion in general fund spending.
