Restoration society wins 1983 Award of Merit in California
The Shafter Historical Society received the 1983 Award of Merit for Historic Restoration at the California Conference of Historical Societies meeting in San Diego on June 24 1983. President Stan Wilson accepted the honor for the depot project after leading a community effort that raised over 100000 to salvage move and restore the Shafter Santa Fe Depot now a local museum.

Over 500 kids from Shafter and Buttonwillow join Babe Ruth and Shafter Recreation and Parks Leagues this summer. Seven to eight year olds play pitched without pitchers, hitting from a tee. Girls 10s won by Tropicana Village with 11-14 title going to Hernstedt Farms. Jr Babe Ruth includes Buttonwillow as 13-15 champions with competitors Concrete, Pipe, Shafter Sports Center, Shafter Kiwanis, and Shafter Lions. All-star regional in Arvin and Tulare setups affect schedule. July 6 games canceled. practice at Kirschenman Park ahead of tournament.

In a lover's quarrel incident at El Taconaso Bar at 1145 E St last Tuesday night June 28 barmaid Lucia Brambila Robles 28 of 1148 St died from a chest wound. Bar owner Jesus Rocha 64 was shot in the back and hospitalized. Suspect Juan Castillo Correla about 24 or 25 fled. he is wanted for questioning.

Free Fireworks Shine Over Shafter’s 41st Show
Crowds filled the high school football field for the 41st annual free fireworks display sponsored by the Shafter Chamber of Commerce in Kern County. The event featured the Shafter Volunteer Firemen under Wes Gorsching, a 1942 GMC restoration update by Stan Unruh, and donations aimed at restoring a 1920 Seagraves firetruck. Local dignitaries and performers joined the program, with numerous businesses and individuals listed as contributors to the fireworks fund.
