Shafter merchants reveal bigger and better bargains for June Dollar Days with values across all departments. Twenty one leading Shafter businesses feature specials on page seven, while hundreds of Dollar Day bargains fill the issue for North Kern shoppers.
T. V. Little and John Turner of Jamet were elected for special salutes at the County Awards Dinner at Stockdale Golf and Country Club. Civic leaders from Kern County and visiting dignitaries will attend as selections honor contributions to the growth and civic development of the Golden Empire. Gene Winer, Kern County board of trade president, chairs event in Shafter community circles.
The Shafter Fire Department and Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture present 400 aerial and daytime displays for July 4. The program starts after dark at Shafter High School football field and is financed by local merchants. Chief Engineer Edwin Bender urges public attendance for a safe Fourth.
Shafter City Council Monday night accepted a low bid from Floyt Bratcher of Bakersfield 10423 dollars for North Shafter Avenue improvements from Lerdo Highway to Central Valley Highway including curbs gutters sidewalks and alley approaches.
Jack Catherell was reelected to the Exchange Club board at the June 19 meeting. Also reelected were Stanley Cook as vice president Jack Thompson as secretary and Leon Reich as treasurer. New board members are A C Burnett Wes Lindgren and Jack Hammond. Stan Cook and Ed Gaede were chosen as delegates to the state convention in Long Beach June 26 to 29. Catherell praised Cook for strong programs this term. Club activities this year include Crime Prevention Week Talent Contest High School Scholarship and youth pickup programs.
Robert Diltz secretary manager of the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District announced second installment payments on SWID water taxes are due. Unpaid accounts become delinquent June 30 with 5 percent plus advertising costs and penalties. Water is available districtwide since May 1, hookups are rising, and consumption reached 158 cubic feet per second with a total output of 448 cubic feet per second.
Erma McCoy was installed as president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Shafter at Veterans Memorial Hall. Zola Loustalot served as placement officer with Amber Graham of Bakersfield assisting as sergeant at arms. Other officers installed include Isabel Crawford first vice president Elizabeth Buller second vice president Bonnie Wipf secretary Louise Bellows treasurer Vada Westbrook historian Grace Annis chaplain Juanita Davis sergeant at arms Alice Jensen marshal with Christine Rootes and Iva Finkbeiner on the executive board. Guests Nettie Talbot of Sherman Oaks and T. P. Rootes attended. Hostesses were Iva Finklines and Christine Rootes.
Chief Engineer Edwin Bender warns about abandoned wells and deep holes risking children in Shafter. He cites yearly child fatalities and urges action to secure sites and prevent injuries.
Police Chief Hanley Witcher reminded residents that draining water into public streets is illegal and punishable by fine or jail. He cited several severe cases in Shafter and ordered officers to target violators, urging public cooperation in conserving water.
The 20-30 Club announces installation of new officers at a 8:30 p.m. dinner on Saturday June 28 at the Saddle & Sirloin in Bakersfield. Darrell Durbin will become president succeeding Wayne Woods. other new officers include Bob Merz Jim Banks Jack Thompson Jensen and Jacobsen Jr.
Paul Newell announces sale of the Shafter Press to Mr and Mrs R Robert Evans publishers of the Tasting News and Holtville Tribune. They will take over August 1 and retain current staff including J G Tucker and Jim Tucker in printing. The paper, purchased by Newell in 1943, notes Shafter’s population growth and Kern County significance.
In the Spring term two sophomores, Phillip Anderson and Shirley Kendrick, achieved perfect A records. About 15 percent of 120 students earned Honor Roll, with seniors at 33 percent, sophomores 15 percent, juniors 12 percent, and freshmen 9 percent. some students earned Bs in gym while acing other subjects.
Hundreds of U.S. Choice steaks are ready for the broiler for the 6th Annual Barbecue of the Holy Name Society at County Park. The event takes place on June 26 from 5 00 p m with proceeds benefiting park supper efforts.

In the first week 470 prospective swimmers signed up for instruction at Richland Aquatic Center. Beginner and intermediate groups each exceed 50 children, 45 youths aged 12 to 16 join the Junior Lifesaving group, and 18 mothers enroll in the adult class.
A quiet week in Shafter without shootings or major robberies is noted by the police. Two victims report hub cap thefts and a fire hydrant was smashed at Lerdo and Manuel last Thursday. A blonde woman was forced into a car on Central Valley Highway. Alice Beckman’s motorcycle is at Santa Fe Garage for pickup.
