Bakersfield judge bound Over Onan Bennett to Superior Court on charges of assaulting Mrs Lillian Grotz and knifing her husband George Grotz. Mrs Grotz wounded in neck and back. Grotz treated at Kern General hospital. Bennett confessed to the slashing during a preliminary hearing in Bakersfield. The incident occurred seven miles southwest of Shafter near a stalled car.
A tropical storm southwest of San Diego moves slowly northward bringing moist air as Los Angeles endures a hot spell with temperatures near 98 degrees in Shafter and a forecast top of 100 in the next 48 hours while southern valley humidity hovers around 12 to 13 percent.
Potatoes moved slowly in the latest period with 183 spud cars shipped Thursday versus 209 Tuesday and 215 Monday. Year to date carloads total 5901, up from 5362 a year earlier, amid wide price ranges and continued heavy loadings.
Shafter merchants are urged to watch for counterfeit checks during the final spud season. Verify checks by confirming donor name, car license, phone number, and address, per the warning issued by the Chief of Police.
Burley Dooley of Shafter High School will join about 450 agricultural teachers at a workshop and conference June 21 to July 2 on the California State Polytechnic College campus. An estimated 150 teachers will study in dairying poultry husbandry and farm mechanics while faculty teach farm power irrigation arc welding poultry feeding dairy cattle judging surveying egg production farm machinery and related subjects.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce holds a regular meeting today at noon at Cawelo Motel. Attendees are urged to join for community activities and to share diverse viewpoints, with lunch beginning at 12 and adjournment by 1 o clock.
Roy Leland Weatherton, 38, of Minter Village, one of three midnight prowlers, was arraigned in Third Township Justice Court on burglary and assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly attacking night watchman William H. Clark after police traced the trio from a hospital break in. Clark said two men fled during the pursuit. Weatherton reportedly grabbed a hammer from his apartment and struck him. A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. July AL.
Martel Wilson, a noted State Chamber of Commerce leader, urged at the Central Valley Highway Association annual meeting Tuesday night that the roadway be expanded to accommodate future growth and to foster economic development along the highway. The Assembly approved Concurrent Resolution No. 102 requesting a Department of Public Works survey for a new alternate highway. The proposed route would run south of Bakersfield, parallel the railroad through Shaft, Wasco, Corcoran, and Hanford, rejoining Highway 99 near Selma, about 15 miles south of Fresno. It aims to relieve 99’s farm traffic and boost farm to market access in central Kern and Kings Counties, aiding regional development.
San Joaquin Valley growers foresee a strong harvest with high quality early bumper crop and favorable labor outlook. Mechanical pickers may double, boosting fields in Kern and surrounding counties. Acala cotton and the 4-42 variety show advances while bug infestations pose challenges. About 227 000 to 235 000 acres are planted with 22 000 to 27 000 pickers used last year.

Carhop Doris Gilwitz aged 17 at Reed and Bell Root Beer Stand near Food Town Market was caught between car bumpers while a truck backed out. She suffered severe contusions and lacerations and remains at home awaiting a two week recovery.
In Bakersfield the county court continued hearings on disturbing the peace charges against Martin Anderson. Attorney Frederick Hoar failed in a bid to challenge the jurisdiction of Frank Noriega's court over a misdemeanor alleged in another Kern county township. The judge denied the objection and set the case for 10 a.m. August 5.
Shafter Kiwanis Club met at noon to discuss and plan next week's Ladies Night Barbecue. President Hanley Witcher presided as reports on the Rose event were given and details shared for a 7 30 p m start in the club yard. Members and guests were urged to attend while no noon meeting will occur next Wednesday. Visiting Kiwanians included Bill Elgar Red Mitchell and Don Suydam with Paul Newell as guest.
Ardis Walker addressed the Shafter Chamber of Commerce urging unification of five county road districts while alleging graft in county operations. He cited resignations and a hiring attempt of a supervisor’s relative, and urged a properly organized purchasing department to curb misused funds. The talk followed a surprise Board of Supervisors vote that same day.
Sunday evening guests at the Dave Muir home were Mr. and Mrs. John Jacobsen and their son Herbie. The party enjoyed dinner on the patio.
Potato growers and handlers discuss a proposed market referendum for the San Joaquin valley. An offer promises a two year subscription to a fast growing semi weekly paper, with a closing date of Saturday July 9.
Last minute plans for a large barbecue at the Qhanneson ranch on Kiber lina avenue set for Sunday after noon as the 20-30 club members meet at Cawelo. The event aims to host about 100 attendees with Marvin Weidenbach presiding and Henry Howell in charge of arrangements.
W B Camp proposes adding forty acres of county land to the Shafter Experimental farm for potato, cotton, and vegetable trials.
