Spud Price High Car Shortage Hampers Shipments
The car shortage persists this week causing limited shipments. Sheds will receive five cars per day initially, with potential changes as runs end. Last week 684 cars shipped, about 700 more than the prior season, while Monday saw 201 cars out. Prices for U.S. grade potatoes ranged from 3.10 to 3.15 by rail and about 3.06 by truck.

Hattie Gilbreath Dies En Route To Hospital At 67
Hattie Ora Gilbreath died Sunday morning on the way to the hospital after an asthmatic heart attack. Firefighters Vern Pierce and Orince Teague responded to the 4:30 a.m. call. She was 67. Funeral services set for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Janzen Funeral Chapel with burial in Shafter Cemetery. Survived by daughter Mrs. O. H. Patterson and four sons Harvey, James Carl, Harold F, and Alfred Earl, plus a brother Ernest Molett, 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Lived in the community about ten years, now residing in Highland Park.

Girl Struck By Auto Here
Eight year old Fayerine Brewer was hit by a car driven by Juarez Amaya of Santa Maria as she dashed across Shafter Highway at Orange Street at 7 20 p m Sunday. The car ran over both legs and the girl was taken to Kern General Hospital by Janzen's Ambulance. Amaya received a citation for failure to come to a complete stop. The child lives at Bailey's Camp with her parents.

Fire Crews Extinguish Grass Fires at Reiker Tract and Church
The county fire department responded at 5 29 Saturday to two grass fires. One blaze ignited a palm tree on the Reiker Tract and another damaged the Nazarene Church roof but was put out without damage. A burning cigarette started the grass blaze on L A Camp Gunnings property.
