Shafter hosts its inaugural baby show Tuesday at the high school as part of the summer recreation program. Children ages one to four compete for prizes from local merchants with six divisions and a grand prize, judged by town officials and residents.
The Kern county outlook criticizes two new State Department of Education social history books for secondary schools. They claim the texts push extreme New Deal leaning propaganda and oversimplify race and economic issues, urging balanced teaching to avoid indoctrination.

Leland Marvin Dargatz Junior age seven drowned Monday at his parents home in Weldon California. Born October 21 1939 in Shafter he is the grandson of Mr and Mrs Sam Obelander of Shafter Mrs Lillie Dargatz of Wasco and J M Dargatz of Santa Cruz. Funeral services will be today at 2 00 p m at the Seventh Day Adventist Church conducted by Reverend G R West of Bakersfield. Burial will be at Shafter Cemetery.
A potato market report notes U.S. No. 1 spuds rising to 3.25 per car and 2.85 on trucks due to a drastic railroad car shortage in Shafter. Sheds receive car reallocations, some buyers store spuds in ice houses, and shipments may surge to 259 cars daily if car supply improves next week. Kern County totals show Long Whites leading May shipments with 13 628 cars. overall county yields remain strong despite fewer acres than 1946.
Fire department activity this week was quiet with only a grass fire on Enos Lane. No damage occurred per the county report. The San Joaquin Valley contains just over 5 percent of California’s lands.
Hot races develop in all three leagues as the Shafter Summer Recreation softball program nears the end of its first half. Standings and last week’s results appear in the sports section. Next week’s schedule lists games at Diamond 1 and Diamond 2 with local businesses sponsoring.
The Shafter Recap softball team prepares for a weekend of high profile games at Richland diamond. They face Taft Elks Saturday at 8 p.m. after a Friday warm up with Wasco. Earlier they defeated King Lumber 12 to 2. Taft is undefeated in Kern County this season and recent upset Sioux City.

Opal Evans of Shafter High School has been chosen by the American Legion Auxiliary to attend Girls State in North Sacramento from June 17 to 24. The selection honors leadership, character, courage and scholarship and offers a civic education through forming a mythical state with elected offices and self government. Miss Evans is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G E Evans and will be a senior next semester.
Mrs Vada Westbrook returns from a visit at sister Mrs Helen Crouch’s home in Casa Grande Arizona Joy Crouch accompanies and plans stays in Shafter and Paso Robles for the rest of the summer
The American Legion Auxiliary installed new officers for the coming year in a formal service led by 15th District president Clara S. Etheridge of Cross. Guests included Dorothy Horwith proxy Mickey Sturm and charter member Ann Zimmerman.
The Shafter public health clinic at North Shafter Government Camp will officially close June 27. A traveling nurse will continue baby-clinic services, and county clinic access will assist those unable to pay doctor fees. The change reflects higher family incomes and funding curtailments as the community moves toward self-sufficiency.
