Effective May 1 2012 policy says free nonprofit community events may run two weeks in Shafter Scenes. Fundraisers such as bake sales dinners BBQs carnivals or carwashes must place a minimum display ad in one issue to be published for two weeks. Call 746 4942 Mon Fri 8 am 5 pm for details.
The Shafter Press and Wasco Tribune announce office closures on Independence Day with ad and classifieds deadlines and editorial deadlines. Vacation Bible School programs run in Shafter and Wasco areas with preregistration and contact numbers provided. Wasco High School Class of 1972 plans a 40th reunion on October 6 2012 at John Bean Ranch with details through Cindy Parks.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and the city celebrated a Street Faire on June 14 drawing a large downtown crowd. Vendors offered produce and food while entertainment and activities for kids, including a petting zoo and a giant slide, showcased community support for local businesses.

Albert Garza, 37, was convicted by a jury on June 14 of two second degree murders for the deaths of Hans Marlette and Manuel Cantu when his 2005 GMC Envoy ran a stop sign at Beech and Riverside in Shafter. He had four prior DUIs. blood alcohol was .15. Sentencing set for August 24 with a 31 years to life minimum.
Former Shafter Police officer Matthew Kirk Shelton was sentenced to three years formal probation after pleading no contest to making a false report about a 2009 incident at Golden Oak Elementary School. The case followed a use of force review showing a mismatch between his report and video, with Perez injured and later jailed for vandalism.
