City breaks ground at new Veterans Park
The City of Shafter held a ground breaking for Veterans Park to be built along Los Angeles Avenue. The plan includes four soccer fields two full sized and two youth sized, a full sized football field with goal posts, an 80 yard practice field, a northeast playground and spray park, and a connecting park path. City officials planning staff and community members attended including Mayor Garry Nelson and Police Chief Greg Richardson. Gladiator coaches and players were among excited attendees looking forward to next season.

CCF aims to reopen the Shafter Community Correctional Facility with about 72 positions. A job fair drew over 200 applicants, with more applying privately as interviews begin and STC exams are prepared. Some laid off staff were invited to reapply, while others moved to other jobs. Negotiations with Los Angeles County are ongoing, and timing is seen as a bargaining factor.
