Effective May 1 2012 community events with no charge may run two weeks in Shafter Scenes. Fundraisers such as bake sales dinners BBQs carnivals or carwashes must place a minimum display advertisement for one issue to appear in Shafter Scenes for two weeks. For details call 746 4942 weekdays 8 5.
The Shafter Press and Wasco Tribune will close July 4 for Independence Day. Advertising and classifieds deadline is Friday June 29 by 10:00 a.m. Editorials are due Thursday June 28 by 5:00 p.m. Vacation Bible School runs June 18-22, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church 400 Kern Street. A Wasco checkpoint stopped vehicles and checked licenses while three drivers were arrested for DUI and one for a felony warrant. Officers impounded several cars but the new unlicensed driver law let owners claim vehicles, sparking mixed views on its deterrent value.
The Shafter Historical Society plans a spring 2013 history book for the centennial. The Book Committee includes Sandy Armstrong Stephanie Benito Susan Boatwright Susanne Frantz Dolly Hein lone Lollar John Maynard and Stan Wilson. They seek photos and information on Shafter figures churches and community activities within 30 days and request calls to Stephanie Benito at 746 4423.
Shafter High graduate Matthew Bender signed with UC Davis to pursue mechanical engineering after a top county discus season. The 4.5 GPA athlete, ranked among the county's best throwers, praised UC Davis engineering and plans summer workouts before reporting in the fall.
The Shafter Youth Center hosted Kern County Fire Department staff during Safety Week. Fire Captain, Engineer, and Firefighter led a tour of a fire truck, explained equipment, and answered questions. Children learned about firefighter training and fitness plus take-home fire safety tips to share with parents.
