SHS Abandons Try for Recognition of Bradford's Record
Shafter High School ended its bid to have Jesse Bradford recognized for a record time in the 180 yard low hurdles. Principal Arthur H. Johnson said the effort failed as Bradford clipped a hurdle, his 18.4 second run in the South Sequoia League meet two months earlier. The request also failed with the California Interscholastic Federation. Bradford has since received numerous college scholarship offers from across the country.

Two Babies Die in County Road Crashes in Shafter
Last week forecast of deaths and injuries during June and July by Capt. James Bryant is confirmed as two crashes on local county roads in North Shafter kill a 28 day old infant, Willie Frank Morgan Jr., and a seven month old, Roger Brady, and injure 12 others. The crashes occurred at Fresno and Poplar avenues and at Searoni and Merced avenues. The Bursey family of Shafter suffers multiple injuries and the sister and father are named among survivors. Funeral services for the Morgan infant were pending in Bakersfield.

Potato Market Slips Again Amid Oversupply and Weak Demand
The potato market remained weak for a second week as prices fell to 1.15 dollars. Oversupply and soft demand for California Long Whites and round reds kept the market under pressure with some farmers abandoning harvests and shipment cuts failing to halt the decline. Cal-Florida and North Carolina regions were nearing harvests while Central California prepared to ship as small truckloads arrived from several states.
