Heat drives July Fourth plans in Shafter as potato sheds pause harvest. The Kern district market ends near yearly lows with shipments limited and prices up slightly on curtailed U S. movement. Growers call 1957 the worst year for potatoes in memory.
The Shafter Recreation Commission reports the summer program is the most popular offering. Director Roy Farrell notes higher enrollments across all beginner to swim club categories, totaling 377 in 1957 versus 230 the prior year, with a rotating assembly-line teaching method across multiple instructors.
The Shafter Branch of the Kern County Free Library will switch to summer hours starting July 1. Morning hours run Monday and Thursday 10 to noon, Tuesday–Friday 8 to noon, with evenings Monday and Thursday 7 to 9. Afternoons stay open 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday under Librarian Effie Wedge.
The July 4 holiday moves publication to Wednesday with deadlines shifted one day earlier. Social civic personal and church news accepted until 5 p.m. Monday and classified ads until Tuesday noon. Readers urged to cooperate to help publication continue.
The city advances the Mannel Park Tot Lot project with installation by the Shafter Recreation Commission and helpers from Shafter service clubs Kiwanis Rotary and Lions. Kiwanis Rotary and Lions purchased the play equipment and will install it once delivered. The joint project between the City Council and Shafter Recreation Commission plans modern equipment for preschool and primary children and expects completion before summer’s end.
A 111 degree reading on Monday tied the June record set in 1954 at the United States Experimental Station. Heat lingered with many seeking relief in pools as temperatures stayed above 100 across the week and relief was forecast later.
The Shafter city council will sit as a board of equalization July 8 9 and 10 at 8 p m to hear objections on 1957 personal and real property taxes and set the 1957 58 levy. A tentative budget is under study and will be adopted after hearings. A budget discussion is urged for July 8 at 7 p m. Officials say an overpass may be built at Lerdo highway and highway 99 to elevate 99 with Lerdo traffic flowing underneath with a similar project planned at Seventh Standard road and hearings on the overpass are expected late this year with completion in 1960.
J. W. Sandy Sanderson, a longtime Shafter farmer and charter president, was re elected this week as president of the Shafter Exchange Club. Other officers elected were Jack Thompson as vice president William A. Griffin Jr secretary S J Catherell treasurer and board members Ralph Baehr Stanley Cook Ed Gaede and Tommy Tucker. New officers will be installed next month.
Tommy W. Trantham, 43, of 157 Beth Eden Street Shafter, was found dead Wednesday night after hanging himself in his apartment. A sister living nearby reported he had been despondent for some time.
A Wasco man and a Oakland driver suffered injuries in a crash at Lerdo and Central Valley highways in Shafter. Leonard Cain 41 of Wasco remained in critical condition at Kern General hospital after the collision with a fuel truck driven by Clifford Hatch of Oakland.
Funeral services for May Bell Dunham 58 of Rt 1 Box 347 Shafter were held at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev John Esterline officiating. Interment followed in Shafter cemetery. Born May 19 1899 in Oklahoma she had lived in Shafter three years. She is survived by her husband Joseph F Dunham and a brother John Cline. Mortuary arrangements were handled by Armstrong Mortuary.
Fred R. Bryant of Brown and Bryant serves as president of the new Kern Agricultural Chemical Association formed after a Bakersfield Inn luncheon. Everett Wingate is vice president and Herbert Denham is secretary treasurer. The group aims to improve relations among Kern County distributors and enhance agricultural chemical knowledge and farm practices.
Shafter faced a teary water shortage Wednesday as a main pump was shut down after traces of oil were found in the water. Superintendent Jack Harris said the lubricant leak mixed with the water but was not harmful. The pump was cleaned Thursday morning and full service resumed by noon.
The Shafter Corpsmen beat the Wasco Merchants 7-2 at Wasco park to seize undisputed first place in the Kern county Recreation base ball league. Wind hindered extra-base hits and fielding. spectators enjoyed the lively bench banter. Shafter faces Bakersfield Cubs Thursday at Sam Lynn Park in Bakersfield.
Rosary was said Monday night at Armstrong mortuary for Patricio Baiza Carrasco Jr 39 of 529 California Avenue who died June 22 in a Bakersfield hospital. Mass was held Tuesday at St Therese Catholic Church with Rev Father Stanley Vachiulis officiating. Interment followed at Shafter cemetery. He had lived in Shafter 10 years. Survived by widow Nicolasa Carrasco two sons Vincent and Robert Carrasco one daughter Ramona Carrasco four brothers and four sisters.
Richland School District will cut the tax rate by 58 cents per 100 valuation to about 1.95 dollars, easing the burden as payments on a 700000 dollar bond issue funded construction and sites for the district. The budget next year will be about 751750 dollars with raises for teachers and costs for operation and transport.
Mrs. Una Kiplinger 27 of 327 E Euclid Ave was burned when gasoline ignited by a pilot light in her kitchen. Her husband Sam spilled gasoline and both were treated for burns. she remains in fair condition at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital with second and third degree burns over most of her body.
The Shafter summer recreation band presents its second Music Under the Stars concert Friday in the bandshell at Shafter County park. It starts at 8 p.m. under Kenneth Fahsbender. The free event invites public attendance and participation. the band practices Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and Fridays at 7 p.m. in the Shafter High Auditorium.

Public works superintendent Jack Harris announced a seal coat and resurfacing of Central Avenue next month. The road from Central Valley highway to Five Points will close to traffic for 24 hours starting 5 a.m. July 8. Last year the street department patched all ruts in the street.
T N Tut Anderson, who led the Shafter Rotary with a tight fist and a roaming kitty, was demoted from the presidency this week after a four point indictment. Jury proceedings in the Ca nelo motel dining room cited his so called witticisms as harming members. George Collins will be installed July 2 with a one time stay on execution.
