Shafter Municipal Utility District enforces irrigation hours to save water. North of Central Avenue residents may irrigate 5 am to 11 am in May June July, and 4 am to 10 pm other months. Officials warn of tickets for violations amid high potato shed demand.
Mas Dorothy Wilkinson and assistant Freda Bebee will hold a home demonstration tomorrow from 10 a m to 3 p m in the home economics room at Shafter High School. Demonstrations include frying vegetables and fruits in a home evaporator canning fruit juices and pressure cooker tanning.
Phil Ohanneson returned from a Navy strip to the bay region this week and visited his brother Lieutenant Commander John Ohanneson at Mare Island Navy hospital. John serves as physician aboard a troop transport in the southwestern Pacific and was stationed on a tiny island near the Coral Sea during the battle.
Shafter postmaster Mrs Lois Rosenstiel plans to attend a three day conference of postmasters from all sections of California. The June 18 19 and 20 meeting in Fresno will discuss added duties and emergency problems brought by the war. The California Chapter No 4 of the National Postmasters Association leads the convention under State President Frank Harwood of Santa Ana.
Horace T. Strong, assistant farm advisor, outlined state militia activities at the Kiwanis meeting. He described training programs, potential deployments, and coordination with local authorities to support civil defense and agricultural continuity. He stressed community readiness and ongoing education for volunteers.
In a 210 to 195 contest outcome, the losers agreed to feed the winners. Mrs. Robert Neuman and Mrs. Al Wolf with a daughter departed by train Monday to visit relatives in Lodi.
Oil firms and civic groups join a two week national scrap rubber drive in Kern Inyo and Kings counties with Tulare county area. J S Gordon of Standard Oil says there is no surplus rubber and firms will pay $25 per short ton for mixed scrap sold to Rubber Reserve Corp. Citizens receive 20 dollars per short ton, with excess split to charities.
A.W. Noon urges citizens to dig down for worn or small rubber items to swell the national stockpile. He notes Japan controls 90 percent of world rubber plantations and that synthetics won’t arrive in the U.S. until 1943. Many everyday items qualify, while some hard rubber pieces are not reclaimable.
Ted Vignola began a one year term as president at the Shafter Rotary Club meeting held Tuesday at Motel Canelo. A program of musical entertainment drew strong approval featuring accordion solos by Gershwin Cohen vocal numbers by Paul Frey and a string trio with Fred Cienci Jim Parker and Tony Sunseri joined by Cohen as accompanist.
Recreation Director Eugene Ford says Shafter residents are too absorbed in harvesting the banner potato crop to attend evening activities. Daytime youth programs may run 10 to 12 and 2 to 6 starting next Monday with croquet ping-pong badminton paddle tennis and other games. No major league baseball teams signed yet and kids leagues under 46 are forming. Games likely at the high school diamond.
L M Coursey of Rt 1 Box 951 B earned the distinction of being the first person in the Shafter district to deliver scrap rubber in Roosevelt’s scrap rubber drive. He contributed a 77 pound load.
On June 10 Shafter activated a full civil defense drill to simulate an incendiary raid. Wardens, auxiliary police, fire crews, rescue squads and demolition teams mobilized at signals from yellow to red. Officials praised Shafter’s composed response during the Kern County Civilian Defense Council exercise.
Walter Eckman, foreman inspector at Pearl Harbor, has finished his government work and plans to leave for home soon. He arrived in Hawaii on June 27 last year and was at Pearl Harbor during the December 7 attack, aiding in restoring order after the Japanese strike.
Residents of the Shafter district are invited to a barbecue and carnival staged by St. John’s Catholic School in Wasco on Sunday afternoon and evening. Charles Castro will prepare the dinner. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 35 cents for students. Tickets available from Bill Brown in Shafter. Dancing at 9 p.m. and other entertainment planned.
Lieutenant Walter M. Hill 26 of Los Angeles was killed in a mid air collision during a routine formation training flight near Shafter at about 8 25 this morning. Aviation Cadet William M. Martin of Salinas parachuted to safety. Hill, an instructor at Minter Field, is survived by his family address 4774 Gambier Street Los Angeles. A board of inquiry will determine the crash cause.
Shafter launches Uncle Sam scrap rubber drive with over 20 000 pounds collected in three days despite initial weighing delays. Local stations now accept rubber at 1 cent per pound. drive leaders list committee chairs and participation roles across the community.
Leading potato growers hosted buyers shippers and inspectors at the ranch of Mayor William Lachenmaier for an annual barbecue. After about 15 years the event featured music entertainment barbecued meat and other foods. The affair began at 7 pm and extended toward midnight.

The Shafter unit of the State Militia now numbers 51 members with a commanding officer, a company clerk and six sergeants. At a Legion hall meeting last Thursday night Farm Adviser Marc A. Lindsay swore in 31 members. 29 more have signed but not sworn. The group seeks a 107 member quota and has asked Governor Culbert Olson for a license.
The Rev Harold W Robinson missionary of the Congregational American Board spoke at Union Congregational Church last Sunday. He lectured in native Chinese costume, explained Chinese characters and teaching methods, and delivered a sermon titled Spiritual Bridges urging World Christian Fellowship as essential to lasting peace. He described the impact of Chinese Christians in China and recounted an incident involving a Christian Japanese soldier.
The Chandlers hosted a Wasco Congregational Church event where Mr. Robinson, active in China missions and familiar with Japanese invasions, shared photographs depicting temple and rural life and recalled being tested by Japanese authorities as a spy.
