Council approves Kern County fire services contract
City and Kern County Fire Department reach a unanimous agreement to switch fire services with a projected ten year saving of 687990. The deal includes 24 hour coverage from four firefighters, an arson unit, prevention bureau, and equipment program plus a new engine at Shafter station. The county will develop a new unincorporated Shafter station by January 1985, city pays 20 percent of construction, city employees moved to county except two captain positions. The plan preserves city asset use and land options, with the city seeking to forego the 213000 construction share. Board of Supervisors must approve final terms before binding.

Circuit Planner joins city
The City Council welcomed Fred Goodrich as Circuit Planner at his first council meeting. He began work June 1, 1983, serving Shafter and Tehachapi part time. Previously Tulare County Circuit Writing Planner for 1 year, assisting Woodlake and others, he calls the role invaluable for broad learning. He has also planned for Madera County and interned in Sanger and Modesto. A California native from Los Gatos, he earned a BA in Political Science from Stanislaus State College in Turlock.

Shafter to Rejuvenate City Streets This Summer
The city plans a 1983 street rejuvenation program using reclamite rejuvenator and washed sand at about 16 000 dollars. Twenty seven locations will be treated weekdays 9 to 11 am for residential streets and Sundays 5 to 9 am for commercial streets. Public notices and flyers will alert residents before work.
