Historic truck returns to Shafter from San Francisco
John Carter, a USDA Cotton Research Station technician from Shafter, recalls driving a 1918 GMC Stakebed truck he retrieved in 1928 or 1929 from a San Francisco storehouse of war goods. He started it without a cab, sat on the gas tank, and drove it to Livingston, recounting a rough first day of travel.
