Plans to clean up La Colonia after two successful cleanups
The South Shafter Projects Committee announced at the June 5 meeting that a cleanup of La Colonia, or Mexican Colony, is set for Friday June 16 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group aims to bring a sewer system to South Shafter, estimated at $6 million, likely covered by grants with residents paying any remaining costs after a future survey. The committee also met with city and county officials to explore tying into Shafter’s sewer system and making the project affordable, while continuing other community goals such as stray animal control, junk car removal, a neighborhood watch, a youth center, parks and sidewalks.
