American Legion retires flags to flames

American Legion Post 865 and Auxiliary Post 213 held a Retirement of Colors at Shafter Veterans Hall at dusk to burn flags unfit for display. Colorguard presented the flags for inspection before carrying them to a fire pit as Taps played, signaling a dignified retirement.

Hotline to report illegal fireworks in Kern County

Kern County Fire Department sets a temporary hotline at 868-6070 for Bakersfield residents to report illegal fireworks or storage on July 13 from 7 p.m. to midnight and July 4 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Hotline non emergency. call 911 for emergencies. Fire Marshal seal or Safe and Sane slogan required for legality. all others will be confiscated with citations.

Shafter Police Officer Charged With Assault

Officer Lionel Lopez, 36, an arrested Shafter police member, faces Assault by a Public Officer misdemeanor for allegedly using force during a juvenile arrest. He is on paid leave. DA investigation ongoing and internal review. Lopez appeared in Kern County Superior Court for arraignment on June 13 and faces a July 14 preliminary hearing.

St Mark's Welcomes New Priest After A Difficult Path

Father Matthew S. Davis, formerly Greek Orthodox, was ordained in Oakland in 1984 and served as a deacon before joining the Episcopal Church in 2006. He leads weekly liturgy at St. Mark's Mission, handles pastoral care and homebound visits, and coordinates monthly mission reports. Davis remarried in Bakersfield where he and Christine reside.

Cleanup effort removes trash from La Colonia area

Volunteers from South Shafter Projects Committee and Kern County Waste Management alongside local residents cleared rusted metal and old appliances into three trash haulers. The effort, third in a series, aims to beautify La Colonia and nearby areas troubled by potholes and overgrown yards. Donations from American Refuse and local supporters helped cover costs and haulage.
